TalkTalk FTTC to BT FTTP

[link to this post]

Hi,

Been a long time TalkTalk subscriber (15 years or so) and very happy with their FTTC service however I've only got two weeks left on my current TalkTalk contract and I'm thinking of moving to BT full fibre 900 which is just available in my area. (TalkTalk don't yet offer FTTP). I do have some questions before making up my mind which I'm hoping people can help me with.

1. Can I keep my landline and current telephone number when moving from Talktalk to BT Full Fibre?
2. Do BT full fibre prices include the landline rental charges if the answer to 1 above is yes.
3. Which router model comes with BT Full Fibre 900?
4. I've heard you cannot seperate the 2.4ghz and 5ghz wifi channels on BT smart hub 2 router, is this true?
5. Does BT router offer modem mode so I can add my own router and wifi.
6. Is it possible to replace all BT modem / router equipment with third party products such as my tp link VR900 v2?

Thanks in advance everyone

Barney

5 - You don't need a "modem mode" to do this: you'll get a separate box on the wall called an Optical Network Termination (BT). Just unplug the BT router from the ONT and connect your own router's WAN port instead. This is an ethernet connection - your router talks PPPoE over this.

Therefore:

6 - Yes!

In order

1. Yes porting number should be possible
2. Yes
3. BT Smart Hub
4. Supposed to be better some say, but not convinced yet.
5. No - ONT is the modem anyway
6. As other poster said yes you can. Recommend initially using their kit and having it around for any fault calls to avoid the call centre get out of not using our kit so we have no idea.

Following on from the well-informed previous answers, go for it, and enjoy.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, sites and mail hosting - Tsohost & Ionos.
Connection - Three B311 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up. 1+ 8 Pro max 80Mbps down, 24Mbps up.

Thanks everyone, good news. Except for not being able to seperate the wifi channels, that's wierd and a real step backwards. As suggested I'll use BT hub until its stable then bin it and put some decent kit in. Currently using tp link VR900 v2. Should I stick with that? Can it handle 900mbits in real life? Any advice on better kit?

Thanks

Barney

Why not stick with TalkTalk as they *should* be releasing Openreach FTTP services this month, up to 1000/115 Mbps? In the meantime if you want a slight increase then ask them to put you on their Future Fibre Trial. Its 'only' 100/15 Mbps but it won't cost you a penny and once they release the high end FTTP speeds, simply ask them to upgrade you.

https://community.talktalk.co.uk/t5/futurefibretrial...

Re router choice, stick with your current VR900 and see how you get on before potentially wasting money. But if it doesn't cut it on the high end FTTP speeds then go for an Asus RT-AC86U or if you want the latest & greatest wifi 6 router, the Asus RT-AX88U.

I would stick with TalkTalk if it was coming out this month. Unfortunately I can't find anything on their website regarding this. I've also posted to their forums (not thinkbroadband talktalk forum) and had no reply as to when I can expect FTTP from them. Complete silence. Where did you hear that it's coming out this month with those speeds?

Call them on their dedicated FTTP team on 0345 172 0074 (UK based), their website won't have any details just yet.

Just off the phone with TalkTalk, very helpful chap but couldn't give me a date for when the full product goes live. Did offer to see if I could get on the trial but it is conditional on me signing up for a new contract and was only 100/15. Upload speed was actually slower than my current package and I would be tied in to a new contract. So thanked him but turned it down. I'll wait a couple of weeks to see what develops and then shift to BT. Appreciate if you could let me know how certain the date of June mentioned above is and the speeds of 1000/115.

Thanks

Barnet

When I last spoke to them in April, they were fairly confident they would be finally releasing the FTTP product in June as their FTTP trial has been running for a while. Re: speeds, almost certain they will at the very least offer FTTP tiers up to 330/50, but they may decide to delay releasing the 0.5 & 1 Gig services - hence why I said "up to". IMHO best to wait for a few weeks to see what they start offering and then take it from there. As you've been with them for donkeys years, they'll probably offer you a very good deal for any high end FTTP package.
