BT FTTH cable to house question

[link to this post]

Hi Everyone,

I'm having FTTH fitted next Wednesday. The question I have is the fibre cable fro the pole separate to the copper, or do they use a hybrid cable. Also does the ONT have to be close to the master socket? Thanks in advance.

More often than not, the current overhead copper dropwire will be replaced with a combined copper/fibre hybrid cable.

The ONT does not have to be located adjacent to the copper NTE.

It will have to be sited near a power socket, better still, a double power socket.

Why's that? Why a double socket?

I suspect in case the OP wants to site the router in the same location as the ONT, although that isn't compulsory a lots of people find it the easiest way if they don't want to start running ethernet cables around their property.

#1 ONT Power.
#2 Router Power.

In my location Openreach leave the existing copper OH cable in place and pull a new fibre cable next to it.

Maybe the procedure varies by area.

In my case I live in a modern house which is ducted UG. But there’s a carrier pole opposite my house (maybe a little too far to serve my house directly though) and I have a suspicion they’ll serve me overhead for FTTP.

FTTP will cover the area soon, we are in a Fibre First area. But I’ve no first hand experience of this scenario of where there are 5 or so houses that are ducted, but the surrounding houses are all fed overhead. It’ll be interesting to see how Openreach handle it.

I'm hoping they can position the ONT on the otherside of the window on the outside wall to the master socket. So I'm hoping the fibre is a separate cable.

Our drop wire, is currently serving two lines, what happens in that situation?

Thought I'd ask here as its related to the OP's question!

The combined new fibre / copper cable will go to a CSP (customer splice point or joint) where the fibre can be split and re rooted to where you want it (if you ask them nicely) .
If you are still going to use the land line that will be connected up as well .

I expect it will be left in situ, and the fibre span put in without its copper pair being used.

Or the copper is peeled back from the the fibre dropwire till the eaves, and copper joint then fitted to the current lead in to the NTE, and the fibre carried on to the CSP.
