ONT placement

[link to this post]

Hi All,

My FTTP install date is in a couple of weeks time, and I need to decide where the ONT will be situated. Ideally I'd like it in my office just below the ceiling, so it wont be behind any of the furniture.

Will OpenReach only install the ONT next to a power outlet, or will they allow it to plugged into an extenson?

Also does anyone know how long the ONT power cable is?

Thanks in advance

You do know the ONT doesn't have wifi - most people would want it behind the furniture to hide it. You will need a second power socket for the wireless router that your ISP supplies which connects to the ONT.

The ONT power leads are rather short, a meter tops.

As Bookheather points out, it seems as if you have a little confusion over what does what in the new set up.

Openreach will provide the ONT wall mounted adjacent to a fixed power supply. This should ideally be within 10m of the external CSP.

From here you feed your router of choice via an ethernet cable ... this router can be powered and sited as you see fit, wherever you provide the ethernet to.

Thanks for replying. Im aware the ONT dosen't have wifi. My patch panel, router and switch are in a wall mounted cabinet. I'd like the ONT next to that, but it doesnt have a power socket close by, but I have a PDU/extension in the cabinet.

Ok thanks nicknack, just wanted to make sure they wouldnt refuse to install unless it was next to a power socket.

My engineer was very happy to plug in to a UPS that powers my network devices. YMMV, of course, but you should be ok. If not, just run some cat5e from the ONT to your patch panel.

You could use a power over Ethernet splitter and power it over the ethernet link. IMHO it is a disgrace that the ONT Openreach provide cannot be powered using PoE.
