Can I drill above my FTTP equipment?

[link to this post]

I would like to install a docking station for my new vacuum in the cupboard under my stairs, but the suitable spot is directly above my FTTP equipment. Could those of you who know about installing such things advise me as to whether there is likely to be cabling going up from the modem? The house was a new build with FTTP from the off, if that makes a difference...

That’s a tricky one to answer ... is it a flat ?

In flats the feed fibre often runs down the wall void from the ceiling space above. So caution is to be advised.

That said, the fibre will be loose. After (obviously) checking there’s no electric cables where you plan to make the hole. I’d advise you gently using a bradawl to mark, then push through the plasterboard where required. Then ream these holes out by gently twisting a Phillips screwdriver through the holes you made.. do this to the size required for your rawlplugs, and bingo/bongo, you’re sorted.

No, it's a house, and the box outside the front door is at ground level, so I was hoping everything would be going horizontally or down rather than up!

All power sockets will have a "zone" where the cables are assumed to be installed.

This zone is vertical and horizontal to the socket, on both sides and above and below.

It's normal for cables to go either vertical or horizontal from any electrical work.

My opinion I would say that the cables would go below, to a cable duct or under the floor.

Is it plasterboard or solid wall/plaster, tap it.

Advance with care !.

You need to put some more cables ties on those loose cable to stop something catching them and ripping them out. !

Hope, but don't assume! I'm in a new build and was able to see the guts of the property before the plasterboard went on. All the cables, electric and co-ax as well as the central heating pipes, go up the wall. They're also taped to the internal wall so not likely to move out of the way! Some do have a foil strip which I think is meant to help you find them using a cable finder.

BTW, if its a heavy vacuum, I hope you have better luck than I did with an ironing board and plaster board... 😳

OK ... so I’d still say use my suggested technique. Cautiously

If you can, carefully remove the the equipment from the wall. There might be a big enough hole where cables exit to see which direction they are coming from.
You can also get endoscopes with lights that plug into a smart phone. If you can find a big enough hole for that to fit in you can nosey around with that.
There are cable detectors to see if electric cables have been chased behind walls. I don't know if they only detect electrical cables or all cabling.
Be very careful and only drill holes if you are 100% sure there is nothing behind.

Cable detectors DO NOT detect fibre, lit or otherwise.

Where the fibre enters the wall is behind the CSP (white box) above the ONT. An informed guess would be that there is a recessed double back box behind the CSP.

Is the equipment mounted on an outside wall? And if so is there anything on the outside?
