Possible location of CSP - one for the Openreach folk

[link to this post]

My bother should soon have FTTP available to him, currently his phone line comes from the pole to the top of the upstairs bay, then into the loft.

I suggested he got ready for FTTP by running a suitable pipe under the floor boards from where the ONT will be to the front of his house at ground level, but he doesn't want a cable running down the front of his house, or a box at ground level.

So he asked if it would be possible to have the CSP just below the soffit, tucked in a corner as per the below picture, the big red X marks the desired location?

We understand that the engineer won't go in the loft, but my brother will. The engineer will need to be up the ladder to install the new drop wire anyway, so could he install the CSP up there?

Would a 15mm ID pipe be big enough to feed the fibre through, and if I remember correctly it's fed from the inside to the outside as the ONT end is already terminated?

Also what's the maximum length of the internal fibre run?

Thanks

I’d say, that’s a no. You cannot expect the OR staff to splice at the top of the ladder. From a safety point of view, or for the practicality of preparing the fibre and splicing it.

The longest readily available ’inside out’ fibre lead is 30m.

Thanks for the quick reply Zarjaz, I wasn't sure how they connected the two fibres and did say to my brother it may not be possible.

Please:

Is 30m from the "top of the pole" to the ONT ?

Can the CSP be internal and next to the ONT ?

What is the max distance between ONT and CSP?

Thanks.

Cheers!

Nope, 30m is the cable from ONT to CSP (customer splice point)

The point is to provide an external access point. Also, the installs can take a fair while sometimes ... so run from ONT outside, then the customer doesn’t have to wait whilst CBT to CSP is done.

So 30m, between ONT and CSP, but I hear you can get longer kits too. You have to bear in mind too, that that’s not 30m straight line, going round a door frame will take 4m + ... and you’ll need a couple of metres to wind into the CSP.

Ideally, the ONT would be just the other side of the wall, near a fixed power supply.
If punters want it somewhere ‘fiddly’ or out of the way, they should run their own cat5/6 between the ONT’s location, and where they want their router to go.

Thanks Zarjaz.

When Openreach bring the fibre from the pole to the house, will the "cable" include a copper pair, ie a sort of composite fibre and copper cable?

Having asked that, I guess it may depend on whether this is requested FTTP or when the local loop for PSTN is switched off?

Talking to an Openreach Engineer yesterday, just before he lifted the lid on the manhole opposite, there are some surveys taking place around the Hawarden exchange area. He also said to watch out for a new box appearing on the telephone pole.

Cheers!

The O/H connectorised FTTP cables have a single copper pair attached to them.

Reasoning being I believe that the old copper is used as a draw rope to pull the new cable across the span.

Also because there limits to the loads a poles ring head can take, and could end up overloaded.
