Best modem or modem/router for ECI cabinet?

Hi all,

So I've recently moved and my new place is served by an ECI cabinet (rejoice).

Just wondering if anyone could give me recommendations for a modem or modem/router hopefully sub £80 that would squeeze as much performance out as possible? Second hand is fine also! I've currently got an unlocked HG612 hooked up to it temporarily.

My general consensus was to try and match chipsets with the cabinet, but I'm not sure whether that's still true anymore?

Matching chipsets being the best thing to do is a myth.

The simple fact is every line is different. What modem is best on 1 line isn't the best on another line, even on the same cabinet.

I find Broadcom chipsets to work best on both ECI and Huawei cabinet on my line (both are available and I've switched between them).

There's also different levels of chipset from each vendor.
The BCM63168 and BCM63138 are the 2 best Broadcom chipsets.

The HG612 you are using is quite an old chipset. I jumped from 40Mb to 44Mb by moving from the HG612 to 1 of the chipsets 1 mentioned above.

If you have a line that is often interleaved and you want fastpath then some Lantiq chipsets are better as they provide a little FEC on the downstream on fastpath.

Yep, fan of Broadcom chips - worked wonders on my parents vdsl line.
Which modems or modem/routers do you recommend with these chipsets?

I recently purchased a Zyxel XMG3927-B50A vdsl router. Its not the cheapest but is reliable with many features. Its not that widely available but try Zyxel XMG3927-B50A £164

I also purchased this modem cable & got a faster speed over the one that came in the box Tandy High Speed RJ11 DSL Cable 1m
