New pod om my local cabinet.

So I was under the impression that G.fast rollouts have been suspended. If so, what is this pod that has been fitted to my local cabinet?

It could be a VDSL2 pod. Externally, G.Fast and VDSL2 pods look identical.

Extra capacity? Not been any significant new builds in the area recently, maybe it's been running close to capacity and needed some extra connections. Also noticed an electrical company were doing some major work in the road nearby a couple of months ago.
Forgot to mention in the original post, it wasn't installed by openreach/BT, saw the guy working on it, and the next day it was there.

It appears to be some sort of ‘active’ pod as it has vents .

I have a friend in Leeds with g.fast ( cab is next to his house ) and looks exactly the same as this - however where I live ( doncaster ) I have seen them used to add VDSL capacity to a cab that already had 2 normal fttc cabs

OK, cheers guys. Just thought it was strange to add capacity after all these years with no new builds. Was hoping it would be G.fast, but not expecting it to be.

Theres a concerted effort to move end users off exchange based broadband onto NGA broadband (FTTP/FTTC) to retire the old network. That on top off the demand for home working means theres is a constant demand to increase capacity.

Kept checking on DSL Checker to see if G.fast does popped up, if not, then it would be VDSL expand kit sadly

That is a G.Fast pod, not a VDSL expansion pod. It has vents on the front of it, VDSL expansion pods do not.

No it doesn't, it is a VDSL2 expansion pod containing active electronics so has air vents. There are no G.Fast pods being installed these days.

I see, and the last time you touched the network was?

So how can you prove it is a G.Fast pod? When from the external view they look identical to a VDSL2 expansion pod.

Yes it has.
The G.Fast rollout has been officially paused till at least April 2021.
It may never resume.

There have been no new G.Fast areas announced since the end of 2018 and i haven't seen or heard of a single pod being installed in 2020.

They use the exact same vented pods for VDSL2 expansion.
The VDSL2 pods contain a Huawei MA5818 DSLAM.
It can hold 4 x 64 port line cards and has a 256 line capacity.

OpenReach also deploy Subtended Head-Ends (mini OLT's) in the exact same vented pods, though this is much rarer.
Andrew did a recent news article on this site with pictures of a Nokia S.H.E inside 1 of these pods.

The unvented pods connected to PCP's are for additional IDC blocks and are often installed for additional tie cables after VDSL capacity has been added.

The vast majority of these pods that are installed now are VDSL Sidepods, and even show up on codelook as "VDSL Sidepod" after they have been installed.

A small amount of these pods installed now will be Subtended Head-Ends.

None of them are for G.Fast.
