New FTTC line (work)

[link to this post]

Ive had FTTC at my property since moving in, think max ive seen is about 62mb and at moment at 50mb sync but SNR went to 6 recently due to a faulty faceplate. ive changed to a external microfilter and im at 5.0snr at the moment and these are my stats with a w9970 modem:

Line Status:
Connected

DSL Modulation Type:
VDSL2

Annex Type:
Annex A/L

Upstream Downstream
Current Rate (Kbps) 18365 53802
Max Rate (Kbps) 18365 54485
SNR Margin (dB) 6.3 5.1
Line Attenuation (dB) 26.7 12.2
Errors (Pkts) 0 0

My line has always been 12 on line attenuation amd the cabinet is about 0.3 miles via the road.

On speedtest results via hardwired i think 55mbs is the max ive seen with a higher sync (60mb ish) at the moment im getting 49.8mb. so a house a few doors down (about 130ft and away from the cabinet so im closer in theory) shared a speedtest and he gets 67.8mb which im assuming means his syncing nearer 70ish. openreach have been no help as i get above the min.

so my question is my wife works are paying to have another BB connection due to home working going forward. The phone lines round here all come via underground ducting so its gonna be the spare pair to the house andim assuming as its a new line there gonna have to connect to a spare pair underground back to the PCP/FTTC cab. Now is there a chance that the new line will sync higher (or lower) . dsl checker stats for both:

my address

Featured Products Downstream Line Rate(Mbps) Upstream Line Rate (Mbps) Downstream Handback
Threshold(Mbps) WBC FTTC Availability Date WBC SOGEA Availability Date
High Low High Low
VDSL Range A (Clean) 73.1 52.2 20 13.8 46 Available Available
VDSL Range B (Impacted) 71.2 49 19.8 12.3 40 Available Available

the house further away

Featured Products Downstream Line Rate(Mbps) Upstream Line Rate (Mbps) Downstream Handback
Threshold(Mbps) WBC FTTC Availability Date WBC SOGEA Availability Date
High Low High Low
VDSL Range A (Clean) 80 59.7 20 18.4 53.5 Available Available
VDSL Range B (Impacted) 78.7 55.6 20 16.9 49 Available Available

anyone who can guide be much appreciated.

Another line could sync higher or lower or the same. It could possibly drag the existing line down due to a bit of crosstalk, or might have no effect at all. It's a bit if a lottery I'm afraid.

Exactly what witchunt says.

Could sync the same, higher or even lower.

There's a chance it could lower the sync of your existing service.
Most of the time it has no impact on the existing line and occasionally will knock 1 or 2Mb off.
If you're really unlucky it could knock over 10Mb off your current lines sync speed.

No way to tell till it's active. Crosstalk is the lottery nobody wants to win.
It's impossible to predict and possibly part of the reason your neighbour syncs higher.

and the neigbour a few doors down being further away from the cabinet should indicate in theory that it should be higher really? openreach wont do anything but if his house is on the same side of the road and the bt manhole are both on our side doesn't that mean that the line should in theory go past my house to get to the cabinets so my line shoukd be shorter ha?

Maybe, but sometimes the cable route isnt obvious and may cross from one side of the road to the other or go up one side and down the other.
There can be many reasons for slower connection speeds from one line to another, some can just be bad luck like the position of the cable pair in the bundle. whilst there are numerous possible reasons that lay in the cabinet alone.

It doesn't really mean anything. Copper can take odd routes - it could go along to a DP and then back to your house. Copper quality varies from pair to pair. Your modem is different to their modem. e.g. on my line, I was getting 24.8M sync with Plusnet-supplied Sagem router, but 26.3M sync as soon as switched to Draytek Vigor 130 - which went up to 27.8M the next day.

As long as you're within the predicted range of speeds, you get what you get. Relax, and try not to be envious of your neighbour's extra few megabits.

Best advice is to never assume anything about the route a telephone cable takes to get to yours or a neighbouring property.

Not necessarily.
Your line might not run straight in the cabinet direction.

I have 2 underground chambers (joint boxes) on my side of the street.
1 of them is about 30m away in the opposite direction of the cabinet. The other is about 30m away in the direction of the cabinet.
My copper DP is in the chamber that's in the opposite direction of the cabinet.
This means my line runs 30m in the wrong direction up the street, and then goes back towards the cabinet in a larger cable bundle, adding 60m to my line length.
My neighbour who lives 4 doors away in the opposite direction of the cabinet has a shorter line than mine. The chamber is right outside his house.
Here's a rough view i made a while ago of how my street is laid out. The red house is closer to the cabinet then the green house but has a longer line.
