Wow - An OR engineer that didn't tell porkies!

[link to this post]

So we had an Openreach engineer out the other week, I know to usually take what they say with a pinch of salt but I decided to be a bit cheeky and asked him anyway about FTTP plans. He told me my street would be FTTP "within months" as they are laying fibre in the estate directly opposite already and my estate is next.

Been checking Roadworks on and off for a while as I noticed we were in the "building" stage for a while on the OR map - Seen quite a few "excavating blockages in existing ducts" or "installing poly ducts" etc but that's about it ... Until this morning

I just happened to check today and noticed quite a few phone symbols on the next estate and when clicking on them the description told me "cable installation" - Fast forward a few hours from when I checked that, I get an E-Mail from OR saying "Openreach is bringing ultrafast to your area"

So it looks like for once I've spoke to an OR engineer that didn't talk total BS!

He may already be a marked man ... there will be so many technical issues in getting fibre to his house.

Wrong type of wind stopping the new drop,

Wrong diameter duct,

Splitter facing the wrong way,

Sun too bright and interfering with light in the fibre,

No choccy biccies offered,

Not at home,

Cannot have fibre above the roses - perfume degrades the cable sheath,

That's one heck of a generalisation.

With the exception of one way back in 2004 who came to fit a separate phone line for me who made Victor Medldrew appear cheerful, the guys (not being sexist, they've all been blokes) that have some out to me to fix stuff over the years have been great and done a superb job.

Virgin (ADSL) => Namesco => Newnet => O2 => Plusnet => Zen => Newnet => Zen => Freeola => Vivaciti (using O2 Wholesale DSL) => Xilo (C&W Wholesale) => Xilo (O2 Wholesale) => Xilo (TT Wholesale due to O2 Wholesale closure) => Zen LLU =>> ZeN FTTP (100 Mbps down, 18 Mbps up)
Router: Fritzbox 7530

There are quite a LOT of Openreach engineers, and some are on this forum. Not a wise idea to say they're talking BS if you want help from some volunteers (posting in their own time and in a personal capacity).

We had a load of trouble with our internet a couple of years ago speeds were all over the place, long story short he did some tests explaining his findings then took the socket off the wall and it had mildew inside (it had been there donkeys years) he then replaced it with a new double one and tested everything again and speeds had gone back to where they should be, a decent bloke who knew how to treat customers properly, obviously like in any job there are bad apples but i don't think its fair to suggest they are all the same.

BT\Openreach is a large organisation and I wish people would stop asking random engineers in the street about when FTTP is coming. The honest truth is these engineers will not normally know but give an opinion that can later prove to be inaccurate. The engineers really should say they don't know (if thats the case) but they normally don't as they are trying to be helpful.

I have always said during my working career that some of my colleagues I would employ if I owned my own company and some I wouldn't. I'm sure that is the case for most people.
