BT Halo - why should I want it?

[link to this post]

I'm coming to the end of my contract, and BT is pushing Halo 2. I found myself signed up to Halo last year (BT suddenly sent me a new contract!!) but I really could not see the value to me. I'm quite technical, so don't need hand-holding.

Is there something I don't understand? Or might I just as well go with PlusNet at £26/month instead of BT at £36?

I was in a similar position at the end of my contract. I rang BT and told them I had no interest in Halo in any form. They reduced the offered cost accordingly.

It appears to be an "upselling" item to increase the ARPU of the broadband product. If you are technical and know what you would do if the connection failed, then you don't need it.

If Plusnet is cheaper, move to them from BT. They do offer a static IP for a one off payment, but Plusnet do NOT do IPv6.

I have Halo 1 as it has the benefit of doubling the data on my mobile contract and if my broadband is down then I can get the 4G backup. I only got it though because it was part of the deal I was offered when moving to FTTP.

I wouldn't personally go to Halo 2 as I do not need a BT engineer with probably less IT experience than me coming around to look at my network/devices - I am quite capable of doing that myself.

Seems a reasonable summary, turned it down when ordering here. Don't have BT mobile so the extra data of no use and with faults/outages less likely on FTTP even less of need.

The IT help part though for some people will be very useful, even when there is someone in a family who is the goto IT person, distances can leave people waiting weeks before able to visit.

And with Covid stopping people from visiting houses is even more difficult at the moment.

Just remembered that the other "benefit" advertised with Halo 1 is that you can continue on the same price after the minimum period rather than reverting to what would normally be a higher price. Still got another 5 months on my contract so don't know if this will be the case at the end of the term but assuming it is. This may not matter though as generally you can renegotiate at the end of contract anyway.

Thanks to you all for reassuring me that I really don't need it! I will wait until just before contract termination, and see what happens smile

I have it after my recent upgrade to G.fast, I took it for double mobile data, the sim for which goes in Zarjaz jnr’s phone ... and the 4g workaround dongle might prove useful since Mrs.Z works from home.
