Fibre to the house

[link to this post]

Fibre to the house
I notified my interest in fibre to the house about 1.5 years ago and lately I have noted that other houses on the road have fibre cables hung on the poles outside all the way along the street up to number 30

I live down a lane at 32b with several properties serviced through BT poles on farmland- my house is 800m from this main road and it appears fibre has been hung on 2 of the poles at the start of the lane but although number 30 can get FTTP , mine, 32b, cant- the fibre cables just have not been hung far enough down the lane yet but my questions are:

a) will openreach continue this roll out down the lane- although all poles are about 50m apart the distance between 2 ( after where the existing fibre appears to terminate) is about 130m ( the line runs underground just here but continues overhead thereafter)

b) given my previous expression of interest and reminder email just sent , will they be motivated to overcome this gap in overhead line connection ( either by installing a pole in between or by forcing the fibre through the underground ducting)

Is this a big job given they have come so far and I'm only getting 25mb with FTCC but need FTTP?

Can I find out the plans for continued roll out of FTTP down the lane through hanging the fibre on poles or will they abandon the investment because of the need ( assumed) to bridge a large span between poles

Thanks for advice in advance

this last pole up the road is 200m into the lane and is about 525m from the pole outside my house

There are 8 intermediate poles between me and this pole all about 50m gap except the last interval which is 130m approx( bt line runs underground on these )

what puzzles me is that openreach have bothered at all to extend the fibre at all to the start of the lane as far as this pole which only connects to poles further down the lane so im thinking they intend to extend - see map below from google earth- distance is 526m marked yellow

Maybe the additional cost for only a handful of properties passed ?

Could you and your neighbours look into a Community Fibre Project ?

proablably best to try and found why it went as far as it did -- , could have been a BDUK programme that did not fnish or had issues or it was a CFP that decided not to do all the premises in the road as they were too expensive - , try your postcode in the openreach fibre checker as they may give you a clue as to what openreach thinks it has done in your area

whats your general postcode out of interest

post code is BT22 1JF

I have checked the dsl checkere for up to property number 30 quarter road and it confirms FTTP

just not 32b despite a start on running fibre down the lane on the poles

Is it only properties in your un-adopted side road that have missed out or have some other properties in the main part of Quarter road also misses out.

yes - only the properties on the unadopted lane which has 10 poles on it so i would have thought there was no problem in principle ( all overhead except for one pair 130m apart runs under the field)

i have since been informed that the plastic boxes on the poles at the start of my lane and on the road are universal clip joints not fibre terminals so where is the FTTP availability coming from for the first 15 houses - will it be drawn from the cabinet which is at the start of the street nexr to number 2? or a node?

what is this terminal (CBT) that is installed on the poles- does it give ability to ' hop' away from the node and extend the reach or is there a distance limit?

I have just randomly checked a few other properties (1, 5, 32, 34, 38 and 42) and none of them have fttp available either so there are other properties that don't have fttp available so I don't suspect its your unadopted lane thats the issue.

A Connectorised Block Terminal (CBT) is whats used to connect a property to the full fibre network so they need to be in reaching distance of each property.

If it was me and I knew some of those property that do have fttp available I would go and have a chat and see what I could learn as it may be they arranged (community fibre partnership / fttp on Demand) for the fttp infrastructure to be installed to their properties.

thats great research- many thanks

Yes the first even 15 houses to number 30 have CBTS -I walked along the road today and was able to identify these ( as opposed to just clip joints on the poles down my lane)

These even 15 houses are inhabited mostly by older retired people and stretch about 335m from the FTTC cabinet at the bottom of the road and looks like an easy way to extend the FTTP - I cant see them cohering as a unit to lobby BT/Openreach for fibre on demand- some are very poor pensioners in small semi detached bungalows

the odd numbered houses begin around 400m on other side of road and are well spread out after numbers 1and 3 so not so cost effective for openreach

all of the houses have CBT on their poles and along the main road in the village (at right angles to this road) CBTS have been installed too- I notice in some instances that there is also a cylindrcal tub like device - what is this and why only on some of the poles

all the poles have the yellow sticker - overhead fibre warning

to reach my house which is about 800m away from the road and the last pole with a CBT is it just a matter of running fibre over 10 poles with a CBT on the pole outside my house or is more work required - 2 poles are 130m apart in one instance otherwise 50m

I also note the CBT s have 8 nodes but there is one CBT for each house - is this just redundancy?

many thanks for all the advice- Im getting 25mb at best with FTCC and its frustrating that FTTP is so close

Just as an aside, it's highly unlikely that the FTTC cabinet is involved. Basically, it never is. FTTP always comes direct from the aggregation point. Unless perhaps your location is very unusual in some way.
