VDSL can improve over time

I noticed last night that I was getting a much higher speed test result - 74Mb/s instead of 65Mb/s. Checked tonight and the availability checker has my line syncing at 79.99. It hasn't sync'd at full speed since the first few months I got it back in 2011.

I suppose one or more of my neighbours must've cancelled their service.

Or a few people powered off their routers for a while, when yours did a resync, but that's unlikely. Does your show if you have Vectoring enabled by chance?

I don't have access to the modem stats but I thought vectoring was only used on long rural lines. Although I'm on the outskirts of town I don't think I'd meet that category. Also worth noting that I'm still using my original HG612. It might be venerable but there's clearly nowt wrong with it

None of them is serving a long D side rural cab. They are all very busy cabs with high percentage of VDSL lines off of them.

I’d have to say that your HG612 is past it’s sell by date. Newer modems make a much better fist of negotiating the best from your line.

Vectoring has only been deployed on early trials, or on selected BDUK funded cabinets to increase SuperFast properties passed coverage.

I've seen dozens of examples of modems reporting Vectoring and every single time the cabinet has been a BDUK funded cabinet.

I've never seen it deployed on a commercial cabinet outside the trials.

Even on the BDUK cabinets with Vectoring it is losing its benefit as any 2nd installed DSLAM or VDSL Sidepod does not appear to have Vectoring.

Even if the new 2nd DSLAMS did have Vectoring, Huawei Node level Vectoring (Multi DSLAM Vectoring) doesn't work across different DSLAM models.

I'm very happy with my HG612 and, like the OP's, it's syncing better than ever but if there is something better out there I'd be interested. Can you name names?

Yes, try a BT ‘smart hub’. Yes, I know the modem is built in, but you asked for an example of a good ‘un.

YeahI was under the impression that vectoring was only used to try and squeeze a bit more out of BDUK cabs and Brackley wasn't funded through BDUK.

Well since it's currently apparently sync'd at 79.99 no modem is going to do better than that



Whether it remains at that level or not remains to be seen. I spent six months a year ago with it somewhat higher than normal but then I had some work done on the house and after power was restored it was back to normal.

I'm expecting to get FTTP some time in the next couple of years and 64Mb/s is more than enough for me anyway so for now I'm keeping my ageing HG612. It only has to hold the line for a little bit longer. For what it's worth my router is a Vigor 2762 so if the HG612 does fail I can always change over to that.

I’ve had full 80 sync at my last three addresses, so technically some modems can do better than that 😉

But that’s neither here nor there. If things start playing up before you get to FTTP, try a different modem or modem/router as a first check. Them Huawei tings is well old innit .

Interesting. I thought 79999 was the limit. I remember when I first got VDSL the modem (the same one - I had it unlocked for a while) was saying an attainable of low 90s so I thought 79999 was the maximum.

Anyway don't worry, I have made plans for its possible demise. But for now it continues to provide sterling service so I'm happy to leave it be
