TalkTalk Fibre 65

[link to this post]

I recently signed up for 65Mbps fibre. After two weeks I am getting 50Mbps.
I am 150m from the cabinet and was previously getting a consistent 66Mbps with BT, and nothing has changed on my system.
Using the test socket the speed is marginally up - about 52MMbps.
TalkTalk did a line test and said I needed an Openreach engineer to attend. Before I did that they textd me to say their engineers had solved the problem. That was 3 days ago and there is no improvement.
I suspect the problem may be that the SNR threshold needs adjusting, but TalkTalk just say the guaranteed speed is 48Mbps.
It is outrageous that they advertise 65Mbps, but the 48Mbps is hidden somewhere in the Terms and Conditions.
Do I have any rights to cancel without penalty?

Are you speeds from speed tests are from actual sync rates? What are your stats - what is the SNR/Attentuation/Line speed?

The last time I signed up with TT the minimum speed was clearly stated, I didn't bother reading all the T&C's, but I did read the offer

At 150m from the cabinet you really ought to be getting pretty much 80/20 sync.

What are your current line stats, and can you describe how and what is connected where in the property. (Telephone line wise)

Zarjaz, thanks, I have only one phone connected - to the master socket through a microfilter. There is no audible noise on the handset. The master socket is 2m from the entrance door. There is no dampness anywhere near the master socket. There are two phone extensions to other rooms but nothing connected, and they are not run close to power wiring. The incoming wires are bright and securely connected.

If you have just changed from BT you will have to wait for DLM to catch up and reduce your SNR to 3db which might give you your BT speeds.

IIRC TT specify the middle or most stable of Openreach's line profiles. BT Wholesale default to the Fast(est).

Those two extensions could be why he isn't getting more, and why he wasn't getting higher speeds on BT. (As you are indirectly suggesting smile).

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, sites and mail hosting - Tsohost & Ionos.
Connections: OnePlus 8 Pro max 165Mbps down, 24Mbps up on Three, and B311 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.

Reading the post I think it more likely that the extensions are connected but that there is nothing plugged in to them. Perhaps we have different understandings of "There are two phone extensions to other rooms but nothing connected".

Yep, I’d read that as a bridge tap issue too.

OK, so can you remove the lower plate of the NTE, and plug the micro filter and router into the test jack please ...

BT Wholesale do not default to any DLM profile. Maybe you meant BT?
BT Wholesale use what the ISP asks them to use.

BT Wholesale use the same 3 DLM profiles OpenReach use (they have to, it's OpenReach's DLM) but the have their own 3 names for the profiles.

What OpenReach call Speed, Standard and Stable, BT Wholesale call Standard, Stable and Super Stable.

BT place customers on either the OpenReach Speed or Standard DLM profile (or Standard and Stable using BT Wholesale terminology).
A number of years ago BT primarily used the Speed profile but use a mix now.

BT will actually change you from Stable to Standard if you ask the right folk on the forum (BT use the Wholesale names for the profiles).

Talktalk do indeed use the middle profile for all customers, or certainly did in the past.

I don't know any residential ISP who uses the bottom profile.
It's used by some business ISP's.

Yes j0hn, you are of course right. I erred because from what I've seen most BTW-based providers choose the OR speed option, and I can never remember the two (stupidly different) sets of three names. Particularly as only the Openreach ones apply to TalkTalk.

I was aware that most providers including BT Consumer will alter the setting if you are lucky enough to get in touch with someone who has a clue, before you give up in despair. wink

The net result of my post isn't changed by that clarification. Typically BT Consumer are a profile faster than TT's choice.

Ah! I have found the line stats on my Sagecom Router.
Downstream Upstream
Actual Rate [Kbps] 63687 12511
Maximum Rate [Kbps] 62220 12511
Noise Margin [dB] 4.20 6.10
Attenuation [dB] 20.50 0.00
Power [dBm] 13.00

Status UP
Connection Time 10h39m34s
Link Status UP
Standard VDSL2 (G_993_2_ANNEX_ B)
Line Encoding DMT
Link Encapsulation ATM (G_992_3_ANNEX_ K_ATM)

It is now 10 days since connection. I powered down the router once, a few days ago for 30 mins. Not sure why the stats say connection time 10h39m - maybe they power down automatically around midnight to test the line??
I seem to recall that with BT a year ago the sync speed was 72Mbps.

They don't advertise 65Mbps this is from the website -

Avg. download speed

67 Mb/s

I recently moved to Fibre 65 and my speed dropped to the mid 20 Mbps an engineer was sent to to fix the problem and the next day i received a text telling me it was fixed and to keep an eye on it, my speeds were back to normal (see below)

My speed test and router stats - (my guarantee was also 48Mbps)
