Guide to moving to FTTP incl VOIP

[link to this post]

I'm leading a CFP FTTP which should be live before the end of the year.

As we move towards installation I'm sure I will get lots of questions and ideally I'd like to be able to point to a guide that explains everything. Can anyone point to a good guide to the issues that people might encounter, specifically around installation (location of ONT), switchover (eg keeping your copper line going until FTTP is live) and the whole existing number to VOIP issue ?

ONT location would be, ideally speaking, within 10m of external CSP. Bear in mind it takes nearly 5m to go round a door frame for instance.

There ought to be a permanent power supply available at the ONT location, two, if you’re going to site the router there too.

If the owner wants the ONT or router in some weird and wonderful location, then their best bet would be having a proper ethernet cable installed to the point where service is required.

If you PM with your email address, I will send to you a word document that iI have prepared that looks into this matter. This would be for your personal consumption as it is work in process to fact check the information contained therein,

The URL is not specific enough to answer the OPs question.

@Zarjaz I intend to power my ONT via POE (no permanent power where the cable will come in) Will the engineer be happy to just install with my injector in place or would it be better to run temporary power and just put it on once they have left....

I use 2 x https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001PS4NWW/ref=p... currently with my Vigor 130s

Put in an extension lead, and tell them you're having an electrician come in to put a proper wall power socket later.

However if you could put the ONT near a real power socket, I'd say you'd be doing yourself a favour in the long term (as well as any future owner of the property). It's two fewer devices to fail, and four fewer RJ45 connector matings.

Putting in a new plug socket is actually not so much of an issue..

My main POE switch is UPS protected back in the rack... so was thinking more about keeping it up in the event of a power failure event smile The PPPOE session will be trunked over a VLAN to my pfSense VM.

Completely agree.
