Anyone with FTTP and a PS5 (Download speed query)

[link to this post]

Hello!

Currently have 900/100 package from BT and have my PS5 connected to the router.

Notice when I download games, I get about 600-700meg speed which is great but I've noticed game updates only get about 110-200meg max.

Anyone with a similar set up get similar results? Always wondered why game updates are far slower than game downloads..

Could it be a limit placed on it by the server?

WHen an update is released - everyone will be after it as soon as possible, so maybe they restrict speeds?

A new download will not have ten of thousands after it at the same time.

Yeah I think there might be a limit in place, game downloads are always blazing fast, just the updates are far slower.

Does the PS5 report its download speed when downloading games as Megabits or Megabytes per second?

Thanks

I follow a You Tube Channel - Snazzy Labs.

He did some research with his 10G FTTP, he found that most servers limited uploads and downloads, sometimes severely.

I also have 900/100 from EE with a wired connection to my PS5. I get anywhere from 300-500mbs when downloading games. The system software downloads are usually around 1Gb and are downloaded so quickly I never even though to check the speed.

The download rates are in megabits per second.

This shouldn't be an issue for game downloads because in most cases they will come from a CDN network that has excellent peering with your ISP (they may even have machines directly in your ISP's network).

To give an example I just downloaded Red Dead Redemption 2 from Steam and the download speed peaked at 857mb/s. Steam uses Akamai for their content delivery network and if I traceroute to steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net I get an endpoint that's 4-5ms away from me and whois lookups for the the resolved IP address point to BT (this is a box directly in their network somewhere). If the download speed from this machine is slow it's only because lots of other BT customers are also downloading from it at the same time but these are boxes that are custom built and designed to distribute content so chances are they can handle the load.
