Backup UPS

I am expecting an FTTP connection in due course. Does anyone know if I will be allowed to use my Backup UPS to power the ONT ?

Does it provide 230v AC?

Can you provide a BS1363 compliant outlet?

Yes it is 230V AC, - made by APC. Appreciate it if you could explain BS1363. The socket for the UPS is radial going to B6 Fuse in Consumer Unit.

What is the ouput connector on the UPS?

Is it a standard BS1363 UK mains socket or a 6A/10A IEC?

Yes will be absolutely fine.

My ONT is the last of the old type with the battery backup unit (BBU) which in itself gives around 45 mins to an hour. Then I run that off my main UPS which also holds up my PoE network switch and router. This means WiFi works, phones work and laptops etc all work without a hitch.

There’s little point holding up the ONT if the router and rest of the network go kaput as soon as the power drops out.

I have my Router, ,PC, and Network Switch all fed from the battery backup which of course will be dependent on the ONT working during a power outage

There is some handy software that came with the UPS which tells me how many watts are being drawn by the equipment and how many minutes of standby battery life is available.

In which case, no problem.

Assuming the UPS output bears resonable resemblance to a sine wave and the ONTs PSU is happy with what it sees.

APC do have a pretty good reputation, covering decades.

They may have, however, maybe 10-12 years back when using what believe was an APC UPS the attached PSUs for certain devices would not stabilise. Other PSUs did and teh problem ones stabilised on a normal grid 230v supply. There was obviously some interaction between the devices maybe connected to switching frequenies in the PSU and the sin generator in the UPS.

As it happenes, my final year project was to design a three phase generator from a 12v battery source.
