BT Smart Hub Hybrid Broadband

[link to this post]

One of my employees (homeworking) has moved and is getting really poor performance from her Broadband (sync is really low) - to be honest she lives on her farm and it will never be good enough. However she does have good EE service. I believe the hybrid part uses EE as a backup.

Does anyone have an experiece of the Hybrid part of the package. Eg. if they quality of EE is better than BT can provide will they let you run just off the hybrid part. Is there away of forcing/tricking it to use Hybrid part? Or is it literally only if the line is down. (we tried just yanking cable and didn't switch)

Bear in mind this isn't my connection so am limited on what I can try testing wise.. thanks for anyone with experience of this system..

Cheers

The hybrid is there as a temp backup in case the main line goes down - it isn't designed for permanent running. Technically you could force it by just unplugging the Internet cable from the router but I am not sure how long you would be able to do that before BT start asking questions.

If EE is better then buying an EE SIM and a mobile router would be a better way to do it - but that depends on whether they can get out of the BT contract or not. Mobile may actually be cheaper as well compared to the broadband package.

With out giving any personal details away, give her Postcode so forum members can look if she can get any better connection eg FTTP .
Some employers do help with providing a better internet connection for there employees .

It should sawitch over - there is I believe a short delay. I have used it, once for several days and it was goog, only becasue my EE service is "reasonable" - in a grey spot.

Just check the 4g status in the hub and it will give a received power level if a connection is there. At that pointjust remove the RJ45 from the hub, wait and then see.

Can also be useful to get a 5m USB extension that allows the 4g module to be repositioned/reoriented.

Thanks all for such a rapid response. the postcode is wa16 8sp.

We tried yanking cable and didn't seem to switch however as someone mentioned we might not have been patient enough..

With regards to contract it does seem that might be a problem - they have said they need 5 days for their offshore team to review the connection. It is syncing less than the Guarantee as far as I can see - so should let me them out assuming they can't fix it and assuming there is some type of fault.

She is going to yank cable before going out now and then see if it has switched when she has got back. I have asked for a photo so hopefully should give us an idea if it might work. she is not very technical and also I have not used the product so all new to me..

Thanks again for the help.

Unfortunately, I don't have a Hub installed now, but someone here may be able to point you to where the staus page is.

If sync'ing at less than guarantee, there could well be a fault. Tell her not you "yank it out" but disconnect from the back of the hub.

Ask her to power down, dicconnect and then wait 20 minutes. Power up hub, without 4g connected, wait 5 minutes, reconnect line and wait. Check sync speeds. Connect 4g module and wait 10 minutes.

Then disconnect line and wait a minute or so - has 4g connected?

Given it's a farm that does rather identify quite closely However, the estimates seem to be 7.7-15.7Mbps, with a handback rate of 4.9Mbps.

I suspect if it's below 10-12 Mbps sync that it will be the on-farm wiring (or wifi if she is a distance from the hub) that is the problem.

Connections: OnePlus 8 Pro, 4G+ (LTE) max 165Mbps down, 24Mbps up on Three Mobile, and B311 4G+ router, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.

Thanks again so "yanking" cable did indeed get switch to Hybrid mode.. She only can get two bars of signal strength - it is on the window so in the best positionish.

However in hybrid mode she is getting 0.23 down and 9meg up! which is very odd. Yet on her phone she gets much better rates in the same room so it is odd.. and sorry this all very vague as I am not there it is hard for me to get actual numbers etc.

I have now just asked her to move the router/hybrid module to another room and see if she can get a better signal and hopefully download rate to rule out just bad signal.. thanks again all...
