Draytek Vigor 2765ac really slow LAN wifi

[link to this post]

Hi all I recently purchased a 2765ac, I have set it up and the Lan speeds for the WiFi are shocking. I can't get it over 50mbps.

I have followed the steps on the below link without any luck, I have also tried playing with QoS and bandwidth limiting settings. Very tempted to get a refund as I can't find anything about what's causing this issue. 2.4 or 5ghz not making a difference either..

You haven't said what you're testing to and from. Are you testing to a speedtest server on the Internet, or to a local LAN server? Is this via an Internet connection on the VDSL port? 50Mbps can be a perfectly reasonable speed for VDSL, depending on your location.

Potentially there are three different issues here:
- VDSL training speed and/or ISP speed
- routing speed
- wifi speed

The first thing to do is to make a *wired* connection from your test device to a LAN port on the router, and see what speeds you get. Then repeat the test over wifi.

Secondly, show the router VDSL stats - this will include things like the upstream/downstream speed (actual and attainable) and the signal to noise ratio.

If you are not using the Internet but testing to a local LAN device, then another possible issue is your CAT5e cable. If it has a broken pin, this may limit you to 100Mbps (gigabit ethernet needs all 8 pins working, 100M ethernet only needs 4 of them)

As noted there's a whole lot that can go wrong in WiFi and WiFi setups, leading to pitiful or patchy (or both) performance.

In addition to candlerb's very helpful post, to get the ball rolling perhaps you could also provide further information that would help to pinpoint causes, including:

1. what device(s) (model/age etc) you are using to test with - this can have a *very* big part to play in throughputs
2. provide some background as to how you are testing WiFi - same room, another space - as well as if you have simply adopted your previous WiFi setup or have set this up as a new SSID etc during testing
3. Do you have lots of other nearby WiFi access points from neighbours or is the air peaceful?
4. Paste up some screen grabs (anonymised as needed) of your WiFi router setup pages. You mentioned a link, but there was nothing further in your OP...

I am testing file transfer over Lan. From a device that has a 1gb Ethernet port. When transferring over Lan with both plugged via ethernet it will transfer at 1000mbps as expected.

The device is capable of transferring at 5ghz and can do 1gbp over Lan but I believe configuration on the router is stopping it.

I cannot find a way to fix this and have seen previous posts about the same issue.

OK. Can I confirm: when the *same* device is connected via Wifi, it picks up an IP address from the same subnet as it did on the LAN? But you can only transfer at 50Mbps ? And this is the case regardless of whether it's connected at 2.4GHz or 5GHz, and regardless of how close you are to the router?

It might be useful if you could show a screenshot of your wifi settings on both the router and the PC. If either of them is configured for 802.11b/g then that has a raw maximum rate of 54Mbps. That seems unlikely to be the problem though, especially if you're sure you're connecting at 5GHz, and I doubt you'd even achieve 50Mbps throughput with 802.11g.

Have you tried different client devices on the wifi?

Does the router have an option to show all the connected wifi clients, and if it does, does it show the band and the negotiated data rate?

Moreover what is the *actual* device make/model/age that you're testing with? Presumably a laptop (or desktop)? Do you know what wireless card it has in it?

Also how exactly are your measuring throughput or getting the figures quoted?

Yes it has an IP from the same subnet it is not a client issue as when i had a previous router it would transfer over 500mbps. Im sat next to the router trying to troubleshoot so its not a range issue.

Is is on 802.11n

Again what is the client device please?

802.11n will not give you the optimal performance the AP is capable of. For that you need to be connected using 802.11AC (and the widest channel supported by your client)

The client is Intel(R) Wireless-AC 9560 160MHz

I am transferring a test file, figures are from task manager and the file transfer screen.

Right so it ought to connect using 802.11ac (rather than n) using two spatial streams at up to 866 Mbps PHY, if you have set 80 MHz wide channels on the Draytek. For the sake of testing disable the 2.4 GHz band too.

Can you confirm what channel width you have set, on the Draytek. You may also wish to turn down the power of the 5 GHz radio on the Draytek, especially if you are sat right by the AP. High power is often a hindrance and not help.

Subsequent to those changes/checks, what is the Link Speed (Receive/Transmit) shown in the adapter properties in W10?
