Phone line Sky, FTTP with Zen - VOIP options?

[link to this post]

Hi

We have 2 FTTP services

1 - BT
2 - Zen

I use my own hardware on both.

Both have associated phone lines, BT provide the phone service on the BT connection, this phone in not used anymore. If BT retire the copper on this connection I wouldn't care, I've no use for the phone line anyway. I'm paying line rental (I'd rather not!), but if the copper goes, will I still be paying that?

The 2nd connection with Zen has the phone line that is actually used, mainly for relatives that don't have a mobile or won't use a mobile to call a landline (I've given up trying to persuade them otherwise). The phone service on this number is provided by Sky. Can I migrate the number to a voip provider and cancel the Sky phone service or will that cause a cease on the Zen FTTP connection?

Any other realistic options (excluding using the ISP hardware)?

Thanks for any advice.

For BT: if you are on the legacy transition pricing, where you're paying separate "line rental" and "broadband" charges, it will stay the same whether the voice is on copper or not. At some point BT will move your phone number onto digital voice on the SmartHub2 (whether you want it or not) and the price will be unchanged.

BT do also have a data-only FTTP service, but the cost is the same as FTTP+voice - or in some cases more, because there are fewer introductory discounts to choose from.

At wholesale, FTTP is data-only: the service which provides voice via the ATA port on older ONTs has been withdrawn from new sale. Even on copper FTTC/ADSL, the data-only services ("SOGEA") are priced almost identically to the transition bundles of phone line + data service - within a few pennies per month.

As for the second one: if you have data-only FTTP with Zen and a copper voice service with Sky, then the two services should be independent and you should be able to do the port of the voice number to VOIP which should cancel only the copper. However, can you explain why you think the two are linked? Maybe there's some detail we're not aware of.

If the two were part of the same service, then porting the voice number without cancelling the FTTP is a huge pain. There's some discussion of this on another thread.

Thank you.

I guess I'll have to suck up whatever happens on the BT side.

For the Zen / Sky thing, not sure that there was any connection at all with them at all.

Next step then seem to be looking at Voip providers. I've used voiptalk before and my Cisco & Snom phones are still setup for them.
