FTTC Providers with a 40/10 or 55/10 speed option?

[link to this post]

I do not want the basic 40/2 speed (upload too slow) but think 80/20 is overkill does anyone have a list of providers that offer either the 40/10 or 55/10 option I have heard mentioned over the years?

Thanks

Very few offer 55/10 now.

Even many of the providers that have a choice of packages only offer 40/10 or 80/20.

In fact some providers like Sky don't sell any particular package. They put you on the package that matches your lines estimates.
Some providers put everyone on 80/20.

You would be severely limiting your choice of provider if you were only interested in the 55/10 product.
The price difference between that and 80/20 (which almost everyone sells) is usually very small.

Fortunately few providers provision on 40/2 either with 40/10 being the lowest option for most.

That's interesting, a community centre I work with has just had its broadband switched from Talk Talk to Vodafone and the modem is now syncing at 55/10 instead of the previous 80/20. This has to be a mistake (Openreach? The line changed its phone number too, the previous number is now "virtual") and we are trying to get it fixed, but I didn't know Vodafone did 55/10.

Thanks the main problem is no one seems to say what the upload speed is.

Basically any package with the 10 upload option is what I am after it can be either 40 or 55 download.

I can't even find prices on some sites without being forced to enter personal details.

Madness it has got to the point where you can't even find out what you are purchasing.

Unless I am missing something even ThinkBroadband's provider list doesn't seem to include upload speeds.

Edit: just found that the provider list does list upload speed if you click on each line - why isn't it in the summary table. Why is everything download oriented!

Such a list would contain nearly all providers wink.

AIUI BT Consumer/SOHO provide either 55/10 or 80/20 on FTTC. (Plus faster on G.Fast and FTTP).

The difficulty would be in finding a provider that does provide 40/2, though I think I have seen one recently.

Maybe your best bet is to ask here about any provider(s) you are seriously considering smile.

Thanks for ideas. I have given up. I can't easy find these details a vast majority are all locked behind having to provide address/phone number details.

If I see an appropriate 40/55 offer I will have to check the upload speed before signing up.

There doesn't seem to be a massive difference between 80/20 and 55/40/2 anyway which is probably by design you may as well just get the fastest for the sake of £2/3 per month on the more budget providers.

Plusnet used to sell 40/2 for their 40M product about 6 years ago, but 3 or 4 years ago they changed it back to 40/10.

The wholesale prices of both are identical, so there's no reason for anyone to offer the crippled upload any more.

Aquiss even sold a 40/2 FTTP for a while. They've dropped it now.

BT Fibre Essentials is only 40/10.

BT Fibre 1 is 55/10 for most however they often provision it as 40/10 for anyone with lower estimates. This results in a few users on Fibre 1 hitting a 39,999 cap and requiring them to contact BT to have the product changed.

BT Fibre 2 is 80/20

FTTP 40/2 no longer available to us via BT Wholesale, hence removal. They started rejecting new 40/2 profiles from June 1st 2021.

Why don't you want to provide your address? How do you think an ISP can give you any speed estimates without knowing where you are?

They don't write to you or contact you.

I just like to keep details private but I guess I could just use any postcode at the end of the day.

My main problem is it is not speed estimates I want it is the cost and details of the broadband products.

It is a *bit* like shopping for a product on Amazon and you do not get to see the price until you provide an address! In fact it is even worse than that it is like you can't even view products until you provide your address.

Nonsense. Either name the providers that you're interested in, or stop complaining. I have tested the following.

1. Plusnet

Go to https://www.plus.net/
Click on "See our packages"
There is no need to enter your address

Their 40/10 package ("average 36M") is £22 per month, zero setup, 18 month contract

2. Talktalk

Go to https://new.talktalk.co.uk/
Click on "Broadband > Compare broadband deals"
Scroll down for details of deals. There is no need to enter your address.

Their 40/10 package ("Fibre 35") is £23.50 per month, £9.95 setup, 24 month contract

3. Zen

Go to https://www.zen.co.uk/
The packages are right there. No need to enter your address.

Click on "Superfast", look at "Unlimited Fibre 1" (31Mbps average download, 6Mbps average upload) is £32.99 per month + £29.99 setup, 12 month contract

4. Aquiss

Go to https://www.aquiss.net/
Click on "Home broadband packages"
Next to "Hybrid Fibre (FTTC)" click "view all packages". There is no need to enter your address.

Option 2 is 40/10 (shown as avg 35 down, 7.5 up). £41 per month reduced to £21 per month for first 3 months, no setup fee, 12 month contract.

I can't be bothered to do any more.

EDIT: of these, Zen and Aquiss show the upload speed (important for Aquiss because they still sell a 40/2 package as "Option 1").

I've already told you Plusnet are 40/10. I also know for sure that Talktalk is 40/10 because that's the package my dad has.

Many thanks for the effort but as already mentioned I think it makes more sense for me to just wait for offers to appear and then look into the details as comparing standard pricing doesn't really make sense.

I was just unlucky I started with the bigger companies like BT and Vodafone as they are quite frequent with offers but gave up trying to find the details/prices without requiring address details.

With what others have said regarding the 2Mb upload should be very rare so virtually anything should meet 40/10. I could be wrong but BT may be the only ones that do 55/10 though.

That's correct: the chance of you ending up with 40/2 on any major provider (except Aquiss) is extremely low, and BT are the only one I know doing 55/10.

The offers will always show you the price, setup fee and contract duration in advance, so you shouldn't need to enter your address details until you're happy to proceed - and if there did turn out to be anything in the small print you didn't like, you can always back out.

I have never seen an ISP require an address before showing their prices and speed, which leads me to suspect you have been trawling comparison sites that do ask these questions so they can spam and make money with your details as well as gettin a cash kickback from the ISP. Turn the tables on them and go direct to an ISP that pays you for recommendations such as Cuckoo. Strangest of all is your hate of upload speed and love of offers that clobber you at the end of minimum contract. Go for an ISP with no contract tie in, low price and good customer service.

Some do try to make you enter your address details before they let you go further. But by probing a bit deeper into their websites you can bypass that. BT itself being an obvious one.

I think the reason the do it is so they can offer the Ofcom-required estimates more easily at an early stage.
