New FTTP - Speeds all over the place

[link to this post]

Had 300 FTTP installed this morning but speeds all over the place. Only about 50 for the first couple of hours, then up to around 230, then down to 100 and now 13 !!!.
Is this normal ? I thought it was only FTTC that needed to stabilise ?

The WAN link speed is just the 1 Gbps ethernet link on your network, nothing to do with the Broadband speed.

I might have missed it, but what provider and who's / what router? What software are you speed testing with?

Also make sure nothing else is connected, whilst your doing speed tests (or at least try and avoid it) as the results may not be accurate

That is normal. The router WAN port is Ethernet and Ethernet on copper comes in set physical speeds (or a combination of the below):
10 Mbps
100 Mbps
1000 Mbps (1 Gbps)
2.5 Gbps
5 Gbps
10 Gbps

Your router WAN port will connect at up to 1000 Mbps to the ONT - it needs to, to be able to carry a 300 Mbps service (and beyond had you ordered that).

That is at least one thing you can cross off the list of possible issues.

BT and BT Business Smart Hub 2 - testing via Think Broadband and also the BT Wholesale Test

It's possible that your ISP is suffering congestion in your area (insufficient cablelink capacity), and it's also possible that there's a borderline optical issue, but first you need to rule out your own kit, especially Windows and antivirus.

Best test: boot from an Ubuntu Live USB stick, make a ethernet wired connection into the router, and run a speed test (or several speed tests over several hours). If that consistently shows full speed, then the issue is something around Windows / NIC drivers / Antivirus - these are common problems.

If you see the *same* speed with both Windows and Linux, then it's helpful to rule out the router, although this is less likely. Plug your PC or laptop directly into the ONT, use a PPPoE client to bring up the network connection, and speedtest again. (Both Linux and Windows can do this).

If after all this you still see poor or variable performance, then put the router back, and raise a fault with your ISP. Show them your speed test results at different times of day. Compare them to whatever speed "guarantee" is that you got in your contract. It's then up to the ISP to diagnose and fix the problem.

Good advice above from candlerb.

Have you any other devices that you can test with? Are they getting similar results. For comparison try speedtest.net using one of their app’s rather than a browser based speed test.
