Gigaclear FTTP Router query

[link to this post]

I am due to have Gigaclear FTTP installed in Jan and have a question about the router setup. I believe they will install a Genexis router to terminate the fibre and convert to ethernet, which will then connect to a Linksys WiFi router for home use.

My question is, can I bin the Linksys router and install my own firewall/router behind the Genexis? I am assuming the Genexsis will have the Public IP address and allocate the router behind a Private IP then use NAT to allow internet access?

Or does the Genexsis just convert the Fibre to ethernet and bridge to the Linksys which will have the Public IP and all the ISP settings?

Many thanks

I just wonder if you should perhaps be asking Gigaclear these questions, it would be interesting to know if they can come up with sensible answers to technical questions or on the other hand haven't got a clue about how they are providing the FTTP service.smile

I suspect the Genexis will be in bridge mode as mine was changed to. The Gigaclear system remembers the mac address of the device that is connected to the Genexis. If you wish to change the device, you have to:

a) Power off the Genexis
b) Disconnected all the ethernet cables
c) Power on the Genexis
d) Wait more than 10 minutes
e) Then connect the new device.

Software such as Opnsense and PFsense allow you configure the MAC address of the WAN connection which is away of avoiding this problem.

The router is assigned the WAN IP address etc by DHCP. As an end user, once the Genexis was put in bridge mode I can no longer make contact with the box itself, and it does not broadast wifi.

I replaced the linksys with a Ubiquiti USG and it worked fine, ended up going back to the linksys, it worked well enough for me and reduced the number of devices I needed.

Whatever device you use set the wan port to DHCP, everything worked, no problems at all.
