Using DSL on FTTP

[link to this post]

Would it make sense to try using my Vodafone DSL 80/20 PPPoE credentials connected to an ONT? Is there any reason I shouldn't try this? I don't want to harm the network.

You can't "harm the network". But unless your FTTP service is from Vodafone, it won't do anything useful.

FTTP traffic is routed statically to the ISP that has provisioned the service. PPPoE usernames or domains don't make any difference to how traffic flows from the ONT to the OLT and onwards to the ISP. Indeed some ISPs like Talktalk don't use PPPoE at all.

You might as well try using those PPPoE details without any cable plugged in, for all the success you're going to have

Bingo, said "Could not find a PPPoE server"

Questions are: (1) what are you trying to achieve, and (2) which ISP supplies the FTTP service provisioned on the ONT (if any?). If this is an ONT with no active service, then nothing will happen.

Yes there's no active service. Vodafone hasn't yet cancelled my internet so I was expecting them to treat my PPPoE traffic equally no matter from what infrastructure they come from nevertheless as your said packets need a path first.

You might do better asking on the Vodafone forum.

I signed up for DSL so I should find it reasonable that they don't offer me FTTP especially at a different address.

Ah no. Doesn't work that way I'm afraid.

They would need to have and active service on the FTTP infrastructure serving you.

Just because you get a DSL based service from them does not automatically mean they will have you setup on FTTP out of the kindness of their hearts.
