my installation is tomorrow and no work has been carried out outside neither digging street up or external csp- I presume like I surmised on an earlier thread that my fibre was being routed through existing ducting to the master socket
this latest email seems to confirm?

yes openreach- thanks for the clarification its just earlier emails talked about work outside the house etc before the appointment and none of this has taken place yet - if all this is managed in one visit - great

just to update- the engineer arrived on time this morning and attempted to thread the fibre through the master socket but it was blocked by the floor of the house so ended up with what is actually quite a neat standard solution - csp on outside and wire through to ONT inside- on balance I think this is better if there is a problem in future it can be more easily identified and rectified as easily attended to outside if required
unfortunately the cbt ( which is in the ground up the footpath a bit) has not been switched on yet - apparently this requires a different engineer and could take 24/48 hrs so not connected yet- should this not have been checked beforehand?
But I have to say the install is very neat with the new trench up my driveway and front yard totally covered in and very unobtrusive csp on the outside wall in the corner next to sky and covered well - the wire to the inside hidden with the drain pipe
A small cut in pure cement across the ramp to my house was needed to continue to track the line in from the driveway/yard was very neatly filled in and is hardly noticeable
would have been nice to have got connected riight away but at least all this infrasture is in now

That's great. Hopefully they will be able to splice up the CBT back at the splitter and all will be well. Someone obviously didn't light test the CBT initially.
It should be up and running soon enough.

finally got connected today - took longer to sort out than expected but glad its finally working
im getting 450mbps down and 45mbps up - this seems about half of what the full fibre 900 is expected to deliver - is there a period of ' bedding in' to acheive this ultimately?
the stay fast guarantee is 700mbps down

No bedding in. Full speed should be available off the bat.
Presume you’re using ISP router and testing using a wired connection?
It might be your PC or device is limiting the achievable throughput. Typically an issue with 3rd party AV/anti spam/firewall software. Or if the machine is more than a few years old and simply cannot sustain the throughput from a browser based speedtest.
Can you check with another device? Note that WiFi will generally cap out around 500 Mbps or so on a WiFi connection based on 802.11ac as found in BT Smart Hub 2 routers.

BT have a speed tester built in to the Smart Hub 2.
If you're using your own router then connect the Smart Hub 2, pop over to My Account section on the BT site and go to the trouble shooting section and run a speed test.
It automatically detects your Hub and initiates a test. This rules out all of your own kit.

There is a fairly common 'bug' with BT hubs (plus EE and anyone who uses the same [censored] thing with a different paint job) where you only get 40-50meg upload. It usually sorts itself out, but if you have a router that can do PPPOE authentication already then just plug that into the ONT directly and use [email protected] as your username and leave the password blank. You should get the full upload instantly and it might sort out your download.
If not, get onto CS and moan. Any excuses about bedding in are tosh, FTTP should be full whack immediately.

To be fair, you don’t even need a router - a straight laptop / PC configured with a PPPoE client on its Ethernet interface will also do just fine. I’s prob a smidge easier to it on a Mac or Linux box than Win. But not really difficult at all.

In addition to what others have said - check that your PC is actually capable of downloading at a gigabit. I have an old NUC at a client's site that is used to jump to other devices on the network, and the 4th gen i3 cannot push more than about 550Mbps using the speedtest cli without maxing out a core.
Edit: I take that back, it was the software bridge that Hyper-V creates causing issues

I was going to add that my old 1st gen i3 desktop (long dead) could handle 1 gigabit Ethernet at full speed (around 940 ish Mbps). So any 4th gen should do it easily!

Even a Celeron can easily fill a gigabit ethernet - under Linux and using a CLI-based tool.
However, using Windows and/or a browser-based speedtest is a different matter.

thanks for all the suggestions guys- in fact it may be that the old win7 dell computer i used for the speed test is the limiting factor - the full fibre is in a house i will be moving into shortly and I put this old computer in there so that I could work there if required as carpets etc are laid - my computer at my current home is more modern but i havent moved it there yet
However I will be taking my work laptop up to the house tomorrow morning and i can run a test on that - its an hp probook440 g7 with core i5 10th gen
