re offers of ultrafast broadband

[link to this post]

my current broadband contract is due to expire next month. looking at current offers and using a postcode check providers including BT, sky, vodafone and EE are saying my property can access full fibre packages and quoting speeds up to 900 meg.but checking my nearest exchange on here (penarth) it says that FTTP is not available in my postcode , only FTTC with estimated speeds. of 20 -40. So do i need to directly contact the ISPs to clarify? I don't want to use an online switch site to then find out i'm getting speeds 10% of those offered.

What is the output from the BT Wholesale Checker for your address?

Lots of data. That specific to FTTP says
Downstream line rate up to 1000 Mbps, Upstream line rate up to 220. states available FTTP install process 1 stage

Our records show the following FTTP network service information for these premises:-Single Dwelling Unit Residential OH Feed with no anticipated issues.

FTTP is available and a new ONT may be ordered.

For all ADSL and WBC Fibre to the Cabinet (VDSL or G.fast) services, the stable line rate will be determined during the first 10 days of service usage.

If you decide to place an order for a WBC fibre product, an appointment may be required for an engineer to visit the end user's premises to supply the service

To answer this specific point, your local exchange is highly likely not to be a FTTP handover exchange so if you can get FTTP then the fibre probably runs back to a bigger exchange.

Yes that's all very positive and indicates clearly that you can order FTTP.

Be aware that although the infrastructure is available and ready, not all ISP's may necessarily be able to provide you service. This is because they may or may not have existing (or sufficient capacity) backhaul at the headend exchange (for FTTP...not always the same as your local copper/ADSL exchange as dect has rightly pointed out). Or they may only be able to provide up to a certain speed tier. Again usually a backhaul capacity constraint.

The best thing to do is try to place an FTTP-based order from your ISP of choice, and go from there.

Checking it how, exactly? Sam Doesn't Know (and hasn't done for years).

If the ISP says you can order FTTP, and BT wholesale says you can order FTTP, then you can order FTTP. No further checking is required. Go ahead and enjoy!

Pheasant

Penarth has had FTTP in places for 5 plus years with lots of new builds so it would surprise me if ISPs didn't have access provided. However some may not have cable inks to all the required equipment as Cardiff is a Fibre first City with around 60& of premises able to order ( over 100k premises available)

There's a feature on this site where you type in your postcode and it gives features of your exchange, including FTTP. it says no but i guess it is out of date. thank you for the help everyone.

Indeed squire. It was an “expectation set” post to the OP that not all ISP’s may be present or indeed capable of providing all tiers.

Hopefully he can order what he needs from whom he likes.
