Fibre to the Premise but only VDSL service?

[link to this post]

Afternoon all,

A friend of mine has recently asked me for some assistance with wifi to an out building on his land, no problem at all but in doing this for him I came across the following scenario which I have not come across before.

His broadband is from BT and he has the BT Homehub but also has the Openreach ONT Modem with battery backup with the fibre line coming in from outside the propertly via a telegraph pole. However he only gets around 55mb d/l and 8mb up on speed tests, I checked the openreach availability checker and it states that his property is only serviced by VDSL via a cabinet. (FTTP onDemand is available) The speeds indicated on the checker are indeed what he is getting.....

I might have been out of the game for too long, is this possible?

MOLD Exchange, Cabinet 21.

Thanks in advance all.

Was the router connected to the ONT ?

I believe some of the early circuits could have a 55/10 profile

Are you saying he doesn't have full fibre (FTTP) via the Openreach network? If he doesn't then he wouldn't have an active ONT.

For more clarity a picture would be helpful.

He has Brown Box outside property where the overhead fibre terminates, from there there is a green cable that runs into property and connects to the ONT which is on and working, from there ethernet cable into BT Homehub router. So looking at it from a infrastructure point of view IMO he has full FTTP fibre install. However that speeds he gets are that of the VDSL range posted on the availability checker (I have asked him to contact BT)

But I suppose my question is could he have a full fibre setup his end but still only get the MAX VDSL speeds available for the area?

Thanks

Or was it an installation where 55/10 was ordered and BT/OR installed full fibre to provide it.

The speed limiting factor for VDSL is the copper cable distance from the green street cabinet. As full fibre comes all the way from the exchange without using copper cable it doesn't have the same issue (I will caveat that with a reference to 20km distance as some people I am sure will jump on me for that) so no the 55/10 profile that your friend sounds like is on is probably what he is paying for and if he speaks with BT he should be able to upgrade and get a lot faster speed if required.

Sadly that doesn't answer why FTTP is not showing on the DSL checker for him, have you checked the Broadband Maps on the TBB main site to see if native FTTP is available in his postcode?

Is your friends property on Maes Glas, CH7 1FP ?

Quick scan on some random house numbers from 1 to 22 on the BT wholesale checker says that none have FTTP available….

When you check the BT Wholesale checker can you check both the address checker and the phone number checker as they can give different results.

However he only gets around 55mb d/l and 8mb up

The speed depends on the package taken and not whether it is FTTC or FTTP.

The BT Fibre 1 package is 55Mb down and 10Mb up on both FTTC and FTTP.
On the Fibre Essentials package it's 40Mb down and 10Mb up.

More likely Ruthin Road CH7 1QH , older houses with outbuildings. The Post code seems to be split Cab 21 and Cab 2..

One of the poles may have a CBT on but google pictures are blurred.

Could be an (very) old FTTPoD installation that has been missed on the records so doesn't show up.

OP (or friend) needs to look at the pole and confirm it has a CBT on.

If he wants more speed he may need to get the data updated / corrected.

He ( or you) needs to look at his address using the OR checker , if it shows ultrafast available BTW has not picked it up a likely reason being his is the only connection on the CBT ( early FTTP-oD installation)

If it does not show someone needs to complete the form at https://www.openreach.com/forms/fibre-broadband-avai... using the other option, and clearly stating that he has FTTP but the database is incorrect and that is preventing them from upgrading/amending his service..
