FTTP install at a new build property

[link to this post]

We have just built a house in the garden next to our current property, where we have Openreach FTTP installed. We registered the site with Openreach a few months ago, and shortly after someone from Openreach turned up to take a look. The man said FTTP at the new property would be no problem, just place an order with a provider.

Fast forward to a few weeks back, when we were ready to place an order, BT said they couldn't place an order for FTTP, only copper. They insisted an engineer would turn up and install fibre anyway. The installation date came around, and no engineer. BT had not booked the installation.

Upon speaking to a different provider, they said no provider would be able to place an FTTP order, and that we needed to first have copper installed so the property was registered with Openreach. And once this was done, we might need to have a survey.

It may also be worth mentioning that the FTTP installation at our current property is provided over poles.

Is there any other way of going about this?

Does the new house have a UPRN allocated by the local authority?

Good question... I can't seem to find one. The address is registered with the council, but I don't seem to have been given one.

The address shows on the DSL checker, but it says it cannot determine availability.

Could this be a problem?

Is there address registered with Royal Mail?

You can check the address on their site at https://www.royalmail.com/find-a-postcode

According to my email from the council, they have registered it with Royal Mail - but to the Not Built Yet database, and that I need to inform Royal Mail that it is complete to be added to the postal database. It does not show on the link you provided.

Once this is done, will I be able to order fibre, or will I still face issues in that respect? Will I have to have copper installed beforehand? Or is that incorrect?

Thank you!

I think you’ll find the order is ultimately failing at a key stage in delivery due to a DB anomaly as the property has not been fully established on the necessary DBs that Openreach use to provide. Been discussed here recently.

What about the other utility services, Electricity, Gas, Water, Sewage, are they all connected?

When your area was surveyed for OR FTTP this address presumably didn’t exist , the dimensioning of the PON for the area is on the basis of one connection per dwelling , a potential issue , is that there may simply be no un-allocated capacity, if for example your fibre distribution point is a 12 port CBT , that is allowed to have all 12 ports allocated to 12 property’s , if a 13th property is built , there are still only 12 ports , and even if there are ports unused, because not everyone of those 12 have replaced the copper pair with the FTTP service on offer , or even if an address has no service from OR of any kind , there is no mechanism to make your new property one of the 12 and make someone else’s the ‘unlucky 13’
Of course this may not be the case , it could be , if it’s a 12 port m there may only be ( for example ) a demand of 8 , so plenty of spares , but then the address would not have any survey notes .
Have you been down the ‘my neighbours can get FTTP but I cannot ‘ route with OR rather than asking questions of the ISP that they are unlikely to be able to answer ?

Ahh! I didn't realize that was how it worked, but that makes a lot of sense.

This may be the case. There is only one CBT at the top of our road, and I remember only a few of our neighbors are able to get it. I'll wait until the address is definitely on the correct database, and then I'll go down that route. Is there a particular department to contact?
