FTTP ONT location

[link to this post]

Planning to have FTTP installed for the first time. I was thinking of having the ONT located in the Garage where there are enough power points.

Can I then run an Ethernet connection about 10 metres away to my study where the Router will be located?

As said, yes. In fact you could have it up to 100 metres of cabling away - 90 metres of solid core cable (permanent cable) + 10m of stranded core (patch/fly leads).

I'm also interested in doing this, albeit an open car port rather than a closed garage. I know it's *technically* possible, and I already have CAT6 running to the car port for an AP, but what I don't know if whether this would be allowed under a typical ISP's installation guidelines / policy - i.e. to situate the ONT somewhere other than the main house.

I wouldn't choose somewhere exposed to the elements, even if under a car port. Whilst you can get APs that are specifically designed for outdoor use, the ONT isn't.

Completely agree. I wouldn’t install to a location such as that.

if you could put the ONT and power supply in something like this
https://www.toolstation.com/weatherproof-box-ip54/p3...
it should weatherproof it under a car port

You would be opening yourself up to possible support issues should you try to do something non-standard like this in a car port me thinks.

I would no put it outside - have it installed inside then run any cabling you need from the ONT out if that's what you want to do.

Or installed my ont in my garage. It's been fine. They ran the cable from the csp at the front of the house round the side at ground level. I pre-drilled the hole into the garage which they appreciated. I then hardwired with cat6a to my opnsense box and patch panel etc. The wife loves it as no cables trailing through the house smile
