Switching between altnets

[link to this post]

Purely out of curiosity what happens if someone moves from one Altnet provider to another (eg; Swift to Gigaclear)? Does it require a new fibre drop or can the existing drop cable be used by just moving it to the alternate provider's fibre?

It will always require a new drop cable switching between ANY different network provider.
Openreach and Alt-Nets don't share drop cable with each other and neither do any of the Alt-Nets share with each other.

For example once Gigaclear have paid for their engineers to deploy a drop cable to your property and connect it up to their network, they do not want a rival company attempting to reuse any part of it.

If you leave to another provider they want you to be able to rejoin without the need to send another engineer, remotely activating your service.

None of the differing networks share a common connectorised cable for the drop cable, requiring splicing to reuse the drop cables anyway.

If the drop cable belonging to Network A was reused by Network B, Network A then needs to pay (again) to serve you.

At the end of the day of your are served by 3 networks and eventually try them all, you should have 3 drop cables and possibly 3 ONT's

This is one of the problems with so many networks, while it is nice to have competition, it is not ideal, you could end up having a load of cables and boxes on your wall. I doubt we will have that problem here, Zzoomm and Openreach will be the only ones i expect.
