In the UK Swish are becoming the goto Broadband company if you want full ultra fast fibre. For normal households they are offering 400mbps lines at a cost equal to or less than normal 35mbps lines.
I just wanted warn anyone looking to go onto full fibre with these ultra high speeds. It's not all plain sailing.
Firstly, check your existing router. It is very likely that you'll have to upgrade to a more modern one that can handle these kinds of speeds efficiently. I bought one from Linksys for around £65 that is doing a great job.
Next it is very likely that some of your hardware, laptops, chromebooks, tablets etc., won't be able to handle to these kind of speeds. Some of my equipment seems to operate at a maximum of 50mbps. Disappointing but adequate I suppose.
As always, hardwiring gets the maximum speed benefit. My PC is hardwired and is seeing speeds in excess of 400mbps on both upload and download. However connecting via wireless is a different story. My best connection wireless speed is my phone, getting on average around 250mbps on both up and down.
Just a word on Routers. Mine was automatically connecting devices to what it considered the best network i.e. 2.4 ghz or 5ghz. However a number of my devices would run on the faster network but didn't connect at that speed. I had to separate the networks and set up two. One for each speed. I set the 5ghz network to a specific channel (36) mainly for my NowTv connection. This enabled my devices to see the 5ghz network and I could connect accordingly. It appears that if a device can't run at 5ghz, it won't see that network.
After much set up work I've now got all my devices running at their maximum speeds. It has taken a bit of time but I am now happy that the change to a 400mbps line is worth it.
