Break in telephone cable between cabinet and excahnge

[link to this post]

If there is a break in a customer's telephone cable between the exchange and the cabinet would the customer's VDSL service continue to work?

In almost all cases, yes.

There are, however, very rare corner cases which could degrade a VDSL2 provisioned service.

Yes,

happened close to here where large numbers lost their voice but VDSL broadband continued.

Thanks for all the replies. Both my broadhand and telephone have failed. The phone line is due to be repaired tomorrow. Hopefully I will learn what the fault was. It started about two weeks ago at just after 10.00 am. according to this web sites ping monitor, The property was unoccupied at the time and there is no obvious sign of damage. The connection to the cabinet is about 400 meters and all underground.

Out of interest what makes you think there is a 'dis' in the main cable between exchange and cabinet? why not between the cabinet and the property or even in the cabinet?

I just wondered whether if both VDSL and phone have failed this was an indication of where the fault was likely to be and others have suggested that it is. I do wonder if the fault is due to my service having been mistakenly disconnected at the cabinet, I have had that kind of problem elsewhere in the past.

I thought BT regularly tested telephone lines. Do they still do this?

I personally think as you have lost both the issue is likely to be on the D side not the E side of the cabinet. I am using pure logic rather than experience smile

I am hoping that the problem will get fixed in a force 7 gale and maybe some rain!. Fortunately my mobile hot spot works as a substitute service for my laptop,

As Dect says, both VDSL and dial tone gone, I’d be looking D side not E.

Not entirely sure ‘night routining’ the block testing of telephone lines, is still done as such. It used to cause issues for ADSL users.
