If there is a break in a customer's telephone cable between the exchange and the cabinet would the customer's VDSL service continue to work?

In almost all cases, yes.
There are, however, very rare corner cases which could degrade a VDSL2 provisioned service.
|
|
|
That will be the modus operandi in future, so hopefully yes

Yes,
happened close to here where large numbers lost their voice but VDSL broadband continued.

Thanks for all the replies. Both my broadhand and telephone have failed. The phone line is due to be repaired tomorrow. Hopefully I will learn what the fault was. It started about two weeks ago at just after 10.00 am. according to this web sites ping monitor, The property was unoccupied at the time and there is no obvious sign of damage. The connection to the cabinet is about 400 meters and all underground.

Out of interest what makes you think there is a 'dis' in the main cable between exchange and cabinet? why not between the cabinet and the property or even in the cabinet?
|
|
|
I just wondered whether if both VDSL and phone have failed this was an indication of where the fault was likely to be and others have suggested that it is. I do wonder if the fault is due to my service having been mistakenly disconnected at the cabinet, I have had that kind of problem elsewhere in the past.
I thought BT regularly tested telephone lines. Do they still do this?

I personally think as you have lost both the issue is likely to be on the D side not the E side of the cabinet. I am using pure logic rather than experience

I am hoping that the problem will get fixed in a force 7 gale and maybe some rain!. Fortunately my mobile hot spot works as a substitute service for my laptop,

As Dect says, both VDSL and dial tone gone, I’d be looking D side not E.
Not entirely sure ‘night routining’ the block testing of telephone lines, is still done as such. It used to cause issues for ADSL users.
|
|
|
Routining was being cut back in the late 90's and probably by teh mid 2000s was very rare. There may still be some done.
One issue was that with a lot of cheap imported 'phones, they would pick up on the routining and think it was an incoming call - which started off the uninterruptable 15 second melody!

Thanks for the reply. My latest telephone bill has calls on it which I did not make because the line was not working, I was not present at the property and if I do make calls they are done via Sipgate. I presume someone working at the cabinet has made a mistake.
The problem was supposed to be fixed today but this did not happen. It has been very windy and it has also rained.

Well you need to log it (again) and have them note for the record how long you’ve not had service for, for billing enquiries.
Just a strange thought … you aren’t off the A30 near Ascot are you ?

He's in Kent, Zarjaz.

So no then.
The area mentioned has had a big E side theft, and then the [censored] stole the replacement cable before the jointing was complete. Toerags

At the moment I am on Anglesey near Holyhead. We have had strong wind and rain during much of the day. Evem some thunder and lightning. I get a much better mobile signal here than in Kent so I am using my mobile Hotspot.

Dial your own number from a mobile, and see who answers??

I did and it jumps straight to mail, no ringing.

I did and it jumps straight to mail, no ringing. Sounds like a loop on the line causing busy.

Or somebody in the middle of a very long call to Nigeria

If you leave a message, can you then "collect" it?

What is a little strange is that I am being charged for someone else's calls and they are shown on my bill under my phone number, but when I call my number I don't get the person who is making the calls I just immediately get a voice mail answer.

Sounds like you had what I had a few years ago. A terrible jointing error.

I would check to see if there is a pattern to the numbers dialled and give the regular ones a call, Hopefully its not the local Chinese takeaway and may help find out who's making the calls.
