Internal cabling for FTTP

[link to this post]

Hi.
In the next few weeks I’ll be having 300Mb/s FTTP installed.
I was wondering about what will happen regarding internal wiring.
Will they install fibre internally right up to the router or will that be my responsibility?

If they're anything like BT's full fibre product (nothing to suggest other companies do it differently); they will pull a new fibre into your home (ideally near the existing entry point) and will install a new fibre "modem" and Broadband router (my BT 900Mbps connection is a two-box solution).
They will also install a new/extra wall-box inside or outside your home.

I expect it will be your responsibility to get a CAT5e (preferably CAT6) cable from the location of the fibre modem, to where you want the router (if it's not in the same location).
I have CAT5e in my home (I've bought a reel of CAT6; but haven't yet got round to installing it); it copes quite happily with the 900Mbps full fibre connection.

One of my business partners has Gigaclear in his village. They installed the connection into his garage, rather than into the home (where his BT phone line is located) so I imagine there's a certain amount of flexibility with some of the providers; but I doubt they'd be wanting to install fibre to the other end of your home smile

DL 900Mbps
UL 110Mbps

Depending on how the fibre is delivered to your property (underground or overhead) there may be some flexibility in the positioning of the fibre entry point into the building, and the ONT inside the building. It doesn't necessarily have to go where your existing copper master socket is. The agreed ONT location has to be within a metre of a power socket.

With a standard install, Openreach will run up to 10 metres of fibre internally, from the building entry point to the ONT location. If you pay extra for a "premium" install then this goes up to 30 metres - this is something you would have to order and pay for through your ISP, if they offer it. There is also a trial of an "advanced" install option which allows much longer internal runs (but is also much more expensive, and really intended for business premises).

Once the ONT location is selected, it is assumed that you'll put your router next to it. If you want to put your router somewhere else then you can, but it would be up to you to run Cat 5e cabling internally between the router and ONT.

The fibre will be delivered overhead via the same pole that delivers our current line I assume.
The master socket is in the main bedroom and a cable comes off that to another bedroom where the router/modem is (another cable comes off that, through the floor and into the lounge.
So I guess I'll either have to move the ONT or run an ethernet cable from that to the other bedroom. Hopefully, if I can make 'friends' with the engineer he may be flexible.
Thanks for your input.
