"Every year more than 600,000 walkers make their way to the top of Yr Wyddfa and traditionally search and rescue teams have to rely on radio signal to communicate with one another on the mountain when searching for those that need help.

This method of radio communication can be impacted by heavy fog. When the Full Fibre infrastructure is in place on the top of the Wyddfa it’s hoped that a small 5G point will be installed that will significantly improve how search and rescue teams can communicate in the future."

Would've thought a half decent VHF base would go way farther than a single measly 5G small-cell

Seems like an EE marketing opportunity in the making to me 😎

Indeed. At least one North Yorkshire mountain rescue team uses digital VHF handsets linking to base stations which have an IP mesh between them, and the handsets can also communicate locally with other handsets when out of range of a base station.

I was thinking perhaps a helicopter?

A drone even, looks like there is one available nearby?

Exactly for a closed-user group like Mountain Rescue, but of course this is at the top of a major tourist attraction, with the idiots that go up a mountain in t-shirt and shorts and then need rescuing when the weather changes. A cell site makes sense for those morons to call for help. (Unless they have an iPhone 14 with satellite SOS, as I would expect that to work from the top of a mountain!)
