CityFibre FTTP install

[link to this post]

Hi,

Having my CityFibre FTTP install done as I type.

The guys were a little concerned about the number of bends in the cable they're running outside the property, meaning that I might suffer from reduced speeds and potentially be at risk of fibre breakage.

I've gone for the full 900/900 package. How concerned should I be about this?

Thanks

Andy

The number of bends is irrelevant. It's how sharp/tight ANY bends are...

However a good well trained installer won't install fibre in such a way as to potentially introduce a fault.

At the end of the day it will either work or it will not.

The speed you've chosen makes no difference.

If there are light losses due to the bends, and they are greater than the loss budget for your service, then the service will simply stop working. Ditto if the fibre breaks.

If you are being advised to minimise the number of bends, then try to choose a route which does so.

Thanks for the responses.

As you say, hopefully they'll know what the minimum bend radius of the cable is and not breach this!

They're just doing the final checks now. Fingers crossed!

To add...

Fibre that is run internally from the splice point will be 'bend insensitive' rated fibre (very likely G.657.B3 rated) - therefore it can actually go around some pretty tight bends without issue.

As a guide - this is the type of so called "inside/out" cable that Openreach would use in their installs. I'm sure that CityFibre and their contractors use something very similar.

Again the installers know (or should know) what is possible and good installation practice. If the cable pathway is not suitable they should suggest a better alternative. At the end of the day they want a happy customer and a reliable installation.

Do you mean clipped/cleated around the outside walls of the property?

Yes. From the box at the front of the house, it went up half the height of the house, then left along the front of the house, round the corner and along the side of the house, then around the back corner and around the back of the house.

It sounds like they were making excuses to try and talk you out of wanting a lengthy cable run to be honest.

Yeah, having done some more research it does sound that way! Any way to find out what type of cable they've used (i.e. whether it's the kind that's resistant to bends)?

Thanks

Wouldn't concern yourself. Honestly. A solid green PON light and you're away. Enjoy.
