Ethernet cable from ONT to Router

The OR ONT uses an Ethernet cable connection to the WAN port on my router.
Is there a maximum length on this cable between the ONT and the router or is it a “normal” Ethernet connection with the usual Ethernet cable lengths applying, ie 100 metres for Cat 5?

Has anyone connected the ONT via cable run to a patch panel and patch lead close to the router successfully?

My ONT is plugged into a RJ45 face-plate, internal CAT5e for about 20M to a patch panel and then patch lead to a managed switch. No issues.

It's a "normal" gigabit ethernet: max 100 metres of Cat5e (not Cat5). Routing via patch panel will be fine.

Normal. Up to 90 metres of fixed (solid core) cable + up to 10 metres of stranded core (patch leads / fly leads) if we’re being pedantic. Cat 5e or above.

so where is the router connected in your set up

Yea, as you suspected that was complete *****

ONT to faceplate, 20M CAT 5E to patch panel, Patch panel to WAN port of router, router LAN port to managed switch

Although connecting the ONT directly to a managed switch is not a stupid thing to do providing it is on its own VLAN.

Yup. Useful to save cabling in some scenarios where devices are not collocated.

Also a handy way to provide power to the ONT (using a local splitter) if the switch has PoE support on its ports.
