FTTP not available due to "No Ducting"

[link to this post]

Hello, I am looking for some advice, and wondered what steps I could take if any?

We are fortunate enough to have two alternative networks in my area. I have contacted both providers and unfortunately both are unavailable to install into my road or joining road. This is due to the lack of ducting in the roads.

Both roads are serviced underground. The road joining both roads is pole fed, and low and behold both alt networks are available in this road.

The average speed in my road is circa 22MB Down / 4MB Up.

Is my only option to wait for BT Openreach which could be up to 2026? Even then, could it be possible that the road still may not be viable for ducting and FTTP?

Any thoughts welcome.

Thanks

P

You could look at FTTPoD if you have lots of money to spend but that seems to be less and less common now. A community fibre partnership could be an option if there are enough houses in the road that would be willing to put money in to pay for the works.

Then there is 4G/5G that might give you a better option for speeds (not so good for latency if you are a gamer). If that is not possible then satellite is a possibility but again latency will be high (even higher than mobile).

You could ask the altnets if they would be happy to build if people in the area would commit to taking the service which would then guarantee them some level of return on their expensive civils work. Alternatively you could see if people would accept new poles going up in exchange for faster internet, which would be cheaper than digging.

Thank you both for the replies. I have tried to talk a couple of neighbours into the idea of faster / more reliable Internet. However they want to wait until I get it!

There are other postcodes like mine nearby, also in the same situation.

FTTPoD is probably your main option then - be prepared it would likely cost at least £10K in install costs (and anyone else covered by the installation would then have access to standard FTTP without having to spend lots of money). Essentially you would do a large investment and your neighbours would get the benefit without having to invest.

If I was you I would at this point be looking at options for 4G/5G.
