BT's Ultrafast Full Fibre Broadband

[link to this post]

Hi all

But if a basic question but is this full fibre broadband a dedicated fibre line from the home to the green cab and a dedicated fibre line all the way back to the exchange? I ask as I'm wondering if BT maybe use the existing fibre line (used in FTTC) from the current green cab back to the exchange (I hope not!)

TIA!

You'll be lucky to get a dedicated fibre line for retail FTTP prices, you would pay hundreds a month for a Leased Line which is a dedicated connection.

FTTP is a contended PON service (Passive Optical Network) The fibre is shared by a number of other customers split from a single fibre. Openreach have a split of 1:32 for their FTTP service, other suppliers may be different.

The FTTP fibre splitters do not go back to cabinets but to Aggregation nodes where other fibres, from FTTC cabs and FTTP splitters in the area converge and then go back to the exchange.

Ah okay thanks for that insightful explanation!

So am I right in thinking that from the aggregation point to the individual homes, it is a dedicated fibre line, and from the aggregation point back to the exchange it's shared by a ratio of 1:32?

No. From the headend to the aggregation node is a spine cable . From the aggregation node a smaller fibre bundle goes to a spillter (PON) where the 1:32 split takes place. This will be within a few hundred metre of the served properties. Then from the splitter to the CBTs that feed each property

…you’ve neglected to mention the (not completely uncommon?) exception of the subtended head-end OLT, that’s housed in a cabinet rather than inside a parent/handover BT exchange. 😅😎
