Which isp deploys the most advanced Fibre hardware?

[link to this post]

Just trying to get an understanding. From the major or most widely available suppliers in the UK which ones are deploying the most advanced hardware? From what I have been reading it seems to be Community Fibre but they are only available within the M25? Who else is deploying kit equivilent or better than them that are more widely available. There are so many Fibre terminologies thrown out that I get a little confused.

I am assuming Openreach might be the most basic type with everyone such as the Alt Nets trying to one up them? Would appreciate any kind of insight to enhance my knowledge.

It doesn't matter if you can't get it. You have to go with what is available where you are if you want FTTP. Openreach is fibre is ok if you are not bothered about having the same speed up and down.

Zzoomm which is around here got a more advanced network than Openreach and for people who are saying about going to FTTP I tell them to look at Zzoomm.

But as I said above, no good if it is not available where you are.

What do you mean by advanced? Gigaclear deploy point-to-point (or at least they used to) so there's no sharing of 'your' fibre all the way back to the switch port. B4rn do the same thing, other networks use XGS-PON which can do 10Gbps on each OLT port. But the only thing relevant to you is what networks are available where you live.

Most of the FTTP networks are now deploying XGS-PON hardware, and even Openreach are testing. Only Community Fibre are selling services faster than 1Gbps.

The swap of OLT (head end) and ONT (home end) is relativelty easy once the optical fibre is in the ground or on poles, so its much easier upgrade than copper or coax networks.

and only in certain places, I'm only 3 miles from Central London and I cannot get the 3 Gbps

Incorrect on only community fibre the only one selling fibre above 1Gbps, Zzoomm sells 2Gbps if you are willing to pay for it and of cause if you are in a Zzoomm area. £64 a month, which while is a fair chunk of money per month is not bad for the speed and if you have a few people in the house paying for it.

That's because the 3Gbps package got launched on the 4th of November 2020. If your area has had Community Fibre before the launch date or relatively short deployment after that date, you don't have XGS-PON that's why you can't order 3Gbps.

All areas from the last couple of years and now onwards that are deployed will get 3Gbps availability by default. We have 3 leaseholder's properties in Central London that went live a few months ago and all 3 of them have 3Gbps option when selecting package.

Of-course, I too have witnessed that in certain areas a couple of years ago when entering random postcodes in London some areas didn't allow selection of 3Gbps.

Those are areas that have had the privilege to get Community Fibre earlier than someone like myself due to faster wayleave agreements. The drawback is that at the time when it was deployed Community Fibre didn't put XGS-PON kit in the first place.

It is possible that in future you'll get XGS-PON upgrade in your area or even higher than that. I think what Community Fibre are doing is first having an ambition to cover all of London to the maximum coverage before upgrading the older builds with XGS-PON or higher.
