Spring Fibre/ Hyperoptic curiosity question

[link to this post]

Sandy, Beds is in the process of Openreach FTTP roll out and I have signed up to Sky. Looking at bidb.uk shows 2 roads being worked on by both Spring Fibre and Hyperoptic at the same time. I am a little confused as if you look at their websites, it says they are not in this area. West Road, which is near me, currently has the pavements dug up with a shallow trench. It looks similar to the sort of thing going on when Cabletel/ NTL were installing years ago. The roads shown as being worked on are all domestic properties. Just curious as to what is happening, if anyone out there knows?

I’m in the same town. I’ve had a letter from Spring telling me that they are going to be accessing the external infrastructure (all ducted and sub-surface joint boxes).

According to Openreach, Sandy is supposed to be ‘building’, however where I am (near Fallowfield), Openreach have descoped my road of 13 houses possibly due to the cost of any civils to bring a fibre in.

Spring & Hyperoptic are definitely in the area as the latter has traffic lights in Sunderland Road at present as the cross the road at the southern end.

Nothing further than that known by myself or my neighbours - but we all got the same letter. We’re not expecting anything to be actually installed, but then OR May chsnge their minds if an Alt-Net is interested.

I'm very surprised Fallowfield isn't ducted, being as new an estate as it is,

I took a wander today. All of West Road and part of St Neots Road South have been trenched. At the bottom of West Road, it crosses the road to head North up London Road towards Western Way. I have seen a couple of chambers where side roads are, but no cabinet, so where will it all terminate? Also, if it is to be fibre to the home, I wonder if they will use the telegraph poles, as there are no connections in the path, unless they are going to use the NTL pathways? I'm presuming the hard core is on top of the cable waiting for the tarmac?

I have emailed both Spring Fibre and Hyperoptic, but haven't had a reply from either frown

Not the best photos and don't show a great deal really.

I’ve had a look at my part of Sandy and it will not be done until BDUK have let the contract that is now expected at the end of this year. Parts of Sandy are being shown as ‘White’ indicating no planned or intent to install gigabit services in the next three years.

We didn’t get FTTC until BDUK stepped in, and even then local implementation was held up for months due to a way leave being held up for totally unrelated reasons.

You can check postcodes here (note this covers a large area of Bedfordshire, Milton Keynes and Northamptonshire):

We do hope to be able to reach all corners of the country eventually, but we have to admit that there is still a long way to go. We are working actively on expanding our network, and it may be that our team is rolling out the external cabling in the area, but the most accurate details of where our service is fully rolled out and available can be found here: https://www.hyperoptic.com/map/.
We hope that one day you get to join us too!

That doesn't mean anything, really. Hyperoptic and Spring may be in the area focusing on the other premises, but that doesn't mean that your premise has an active wayleave agreeement and or roll out plan!

I'm in the same situation here in Central London, Aldgate East. Many buildings around me have Hyperoptic. In my case it will show
2 We're rolling out in your area

We're bringing our full fibre network to your area!
Before we can connect you, we'll need permission from the Freeholder or Property Manager - so be sure to let them know you're interested.
That's what the Work in progress will show when entering postcode. This means Hyperoptic are interested but haven't yet been granted a wayleave agreement by the Freeholder/property manager.

Though we have Community Fibre here live and taking orders. I personally am a registered Hyperoptic Champion of my building, I did my best to get residents to register their interest and speak to my Technical Services Manager in 2014/15. In 2015 I got a phone call from the Housing Association Manager saying that the technical services manager at that time wasn't going to agree with Hyperoptic. If they were to make a deal they'll do it with another provider.

So it is possible that one freeholder/property manager may agree wayleave with one provider but not agree with another. At least I know in my case that my current technical services manager will never ever agree a wayleave with Hyperoptic even though they signed up a wayleave agreement with Community Fibre.

Maybe after 20 years or so if my technical manager is replaced then an agreement may happen with another person, it all depends.

Not everyone will get wayleave agreements for multiple FTTP overbuilds, it all depends on the freeholder if they are generous enough to make those agreements.

Interesting, thank you. Definitely external cabling as it is all shallow trenches. I've registered for updates, but it says "we won't be seeing you for a while yet". Curiosity hasn't (yet) killed this cat smile
