wifi calling stopped working on Hey Broadband

[link to this post]

Hi,

wifi calling is key where I live and it has stopped working on my EE phone when on my home wifi. My home ISP is Hey Broadband.

Wifi calling works fine on other wifi networks.

Anyone else using wifi calling on EE with Hey Broadband?

In case relevant, I have an Android phone.

TIA!

Might be if the IP address that Hey Broadband is using to connect you to EE (you can see this if you google "what is my IP") is one that EE don't think is in the UK.

I think Hey have a track record of using non UK IP ranges so you are probably spot on with that suggestion.

Its not easy for the newer ISPs whom have to buy what they can on the international market. Almost certainly the ISP has updated the regional registry with the current owners, but some organisations often don't update very often. The BBC iPlayer famously caused pain for Plusnet years ago. IPv6 should solve the problem, but that isn't easy either.

All the UK mobile companies block WiFi Calling from outside the UK, which is annoying as the US mobile companies such as T-Mobile USA have no issues with it.

At the risk of going off topic: not a lot of sympathy here. The first version of the IPv6 spec (RFC 1883) was published before I was born. There's very little excuse for not implementing it, especially for new ISPs.

Agreed. But that being said, much of the internet is still not IPv6-ready.

Does anyone know if it is at least in plan for HeyB?

Neither EE or Vodafone have IPv6 enabled IMS services for Wi-Fi calling, it all goes over IPv4, so it doesn't matter if the ISP supports IPv6 in this case. Not sure why they don't have IPv6 available on their IMS servers?

It would be easier and more reliable to use IPv6 given Wi-Fi calling uses a IPSEC VPN which breaks over NAT on IPv4, however virtually all routers using NAT support IPSEC traversal which allows IPSEC to work the majority of time. Maybe mobile operators don't like the randomly changing IPv6 addresses they would get from mobile devices on IPv6?

Quite agree though, all ISPs in 2023 should be supporting IPv6.

IPSEC with the NAT Traversal option (NAT-T) uses UDP encapsulation, which doesn't need any special support from the router beyond regular NAT. This feature was introduced to IPSEC in 2005.

It's only ancient IPSEC implementations which don't support NAT-T (i.e. can only perform direct ESP encapsulation) which need help from the router.
