Octaplus (City Fibre) 900MB

[link to this post]

Hi,

I've recently had Octaplus (City Fibre) installed.
I currently at best pull around 750/750 give or take after doing various speed tests.

I am aware there are various variables that can effect results, however I am just wanting advice on if my setup is sufficent to prevent any bottlenecks within my home.

Everything I refer to is 'Wired' not wifi.

I initially had the supplied pre-configured router installed (TP-LINK EX230V), which gave me similar speed test results to my Netgear R7800 router.
I decided to set up the connection on my Netgear router (Nighthawk(R) X4S R7800).

Cables used are all good quality Cat 7 cables.
No VPN or anything else connected.
Static IP (not on CGNAT)

My connected device for testing is linked as follows...

FIBRE WALL SOCKET RJ45 -> Netgear Nighthawk(R) X4S R7800 -> Netgear JGS516 Unmanaged 16 Port Network Switch 10/100/1000Mpbs -> ASUS RAMPAGE V EXTREME LAN Port 1000/1000 (green light indicates 1000 link)

Obviously if I can get as close as possible to 900MB (as reported 900+ can be obtained) I'd like to do so.
Just wondering if I need to consider looking at a hardware upgrade?

Thanks in advance

Are you running Windows on that ASUS RAMPAGE machine, and if so are you running any third party security product?

Try making a USB Linux stick and running a speed test on that. You'll probably find something in windows is the problem, at least this will rule out the connection.

@Lien1454,

IMHO, you should uninstall Kaspersky for 2 reasons: 1) NO ONE should be using anything Russian after they invaded Ukraine & 2) Windows has it's own internal security software which is better than anything Russian. You could say it's like adding another engine to your car just because you don't really like the existing engine. Your existing engine is sufficient to get you from A to B just fine.

Just thought I would add my 2 pence worth...take or leave it...

Kaspersky Anti Virus.
Unfortunately like most 3rd party security software, KAV, along with Norton, McAfee and others has decided to replace parts of Microsoft's operating system with their own "secure" versions. They have a lot less staff and have no idea how to optimise, so you end up with poor performance.

Have a look at Kaspersky's own guide to how to remove, and look at sites such as Bleeping Computer, and get rid of this expensive paid malware.

In 2023 third party antivirus tools are "snake oil", this isn't 2002 with XP.

Check this review https://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-re...
It may be the WAN throughput is holding you back as well. The average is around what you are seeing, but the max is over 900 at times.
