Static IP address - will it follow a FTTC -> FTTP migration?

[link to this post]

I have just had my FTTP install done (an excellent job by Jamie from Kelly Communications) and it's up and running nicely with good speeds and all that.

However, as a Utility Warehouse customer and supplied via Talktalk, my WAN IP address which is static and has been so for the last 4 years, has changed to somewhere else within Talktalk's various IP blocks.

Anyone know if it will sort itself out, it was suggested that possibly my ONT will update its firmware and reboot which will cause a new PPPoE session to initiate and maybe then the IP address will return to normal.

A PPP session restart did change my WAN IP address, but not to the static address I am supposed to have with UW. Looks like a phone call is going to be in order.

Cheers!

That sounds like you're now on a dynamic IP.

That's definitely not the case. The ONT is invisible/transparent to the provider and had absolutely nothing to do with IP addresses. The firmware of the ONT makes no difference either.

I would have said it's unlikely you would keep the same static IP after moving from FTTC to FTTP with many providers. Smaller niche providers with more control of their network can do this easier but I wouldn't be confident in Utility Warehouse/Talktalk managing this.

They should be able to give you a static IP again easy enough though if might differ from what it was before.

It's entirely down to what your ISP choose to do. If they put FTTC and FTTP customers on different networks then it may not be possible.

It looks like Utility Warehouse no longer offers static IPs, so I suspect you lost yours when you regraded to FTTP.

Yes, I understand exactly what you're saying, I meant that if the ONT firmware updated as it was suggested to me that this was likely by the installing engineer (and I did have a different IP address this morning from what it was last night, so a PPP restart is likely to have happened for whatever reason. However the IP address I now have is not my original static address, so it's likely that address will change once UW/Talktalk sort it out for me.

I spoke to the UW tech support this morning and they have put this in train for me once again, I don't care what the address is but naturally I'd just like it to be static so that I can get my servers visible from the outside world again. It's been static for over 4 years with UW, I can live with a short interruption.

I don't know why you say that, I called tech support this morning and they are initiating a task to get the static IP re-provisioned.

It's supposed to be done within 48 hours.

I don't know why you say that [...]

UW no longer reference static IP addresses in their residential price guide, only in their business price guide. That said, I'm glad that they've managed to arrange a solution for you.

Interesting. They do have an answer in the FAQ for what to do if you no longer require a static address, just not how to request one. Not sure if they charged for it, I have never had to pay anything.

I noticed a change of IP address yesterday, and the reverse name has .static. in the PTR record, so it seems to be sorted out now.

Now to hope that any gyrations at Talktalk don't upset the status quo.
