Cityfibre ONT seems to not respond

[link to this post]

Hi all,

I've had Cityfibre for many months with IDnet as the ISP. It's all been working great until today, when I had to unplug the ONT. I plugged it back in a few seconds later... and no internet. All four lights are on. The ONT is a Calix GigaPoint 801Gv2.

The router is a Ubiquiti USG. Nothing changed with the configuration for many months. I've also tried a Mikrotik router which isn't working either.

I've tried plugging the ONT directly into my Macbook and running tcpdump and I just see no traffic from the ONT. I've ran tcpdump on the USG and see PPPoe PADI but no reply.

admin@LoftRouter:~$ sudo tcpdump -nvi eth0
tcpdump: listening on eth0, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 262144 bytes
17:13:54.155782 PPPoE PADI [Service-Name] [Host-Uniq 0x00000CDD]
17:14:04.165687 PPPoE PADI [Service-Name] [Host-Uniq 0x00000CDD]
17:14:24.185642 PPPoE PADI [Service-Name] [Host-Uniq 0x00000CDD]

It seems as if the ONT is bringing the link up, but refusing to communicate for some reason.

Has anyone seen this before? I have been on the phone to IDnet support today who were not very helpful and muttered something about running some diagnostics but not expecting much to happen for a while due to Christmas. Does the ONT have a way to get any debug data or status page? Many thanks for any help.

If all the lights are on the ONT then it sounds like the ONT is connecting fine.
Sounds more like the PPP session isn't connecting with IDNET which has zero to do with the ONT.

Is it *just* the ONT that you unplugged, to rule out a router with a config change in that hadn't been saved.

There is a reset button on the ONT that you can press for over 5 seconds to get it to grab the config again, but that might cause more problems than it solves.

Thanks for your reply.

It's just the ONT that I unplugged. The router is plugged in to a different socket in a different part of the house. I'm confident that there has been no change to the router config.

I've tried the reset button on the ONT but it hasn't helped unfortunately.

You're right, it could be nothing to do with the ONT. On the phone they said that they were not seeing any PPP authentication requests. Unfortunately all they could offer to do was run some diagnostic tests on the line which I haven't had any results from yet (nor expecting it for a while due to the timing).

Thanks.

In reply to a post by fluffycat225:

I would also temporarily try plugging the router directly into the ONT just to be 100% sure (belt and braces).

Do you know what VLAN you need to use (if any) with IDNet on Cityfibre, and do you have that VLAN configured?

Thanks, I tried that yesterday, didn't help. I spent a good part of yesterday messing about with it, reconfiguring the router from scratch, restoring config backups, new cables, etc.

I put all of back in its normal place last night, haven't touched it since, and it started working again about an hour ago.

So I'm filing this under unexplained mysteries for now.

Yes, it's been configured with VLAN 911 for a year or so. I was actually using a managed switch to strip the VLAN tag off so I didn't need to configure the VLAN on the router which has been working great. Bypassing that and configuring the VLAN on the router didn't help either. Anyway as I said in the other post it suddenly started working again an hour ago, so Merry Christmas and thanks all.
