Random question

[link to this post]

A colleague has moved into a new build flat, which only has service from STL (See The Light) …… who he says are owned by Sky.

The full fibre service is working as expected.

My colleague, with an inquiring mind, and not liking the WiFi performance from the STL box, decides to try an old Sky router into the ONT, it won’t authenticate, I’m not surprised, do they not authenticate via AC address or summat ?

He then tried a BT retail Smart hub 6, changing the setting for ‘full fibre mode’ in the router, and the cable from the ONT went into LAN4 ….. this is all he changed, original generic username and password stayed … and bingo, it works ????????

How ?

Surely a Sky based FTTP service could have no way for a connection to present itself to a BT Retail home gateway ???

Yeah, I think See The Light is an ISP (now owned by Sky) that operates on the OFNL infrastructure, so I'm also confused...!

At a guess STL use PPPoE but don't care about the credentials in the same way that BT don't care about the credentials, so the Hub works. A Sky router is trying to do DHCP.

Edit: https://business.seethelight.co.uk/help/getting-started

When setting up your own router you may be asked for a "PPPoE username" and "PPPoE password". The seethelight network does not use these parameters so you can enter anything you like in these fields however it is recommended that they are not left blank.
