CityFibre XGS-PON

[link to this post]

Does anyone know the current state of them upgrading of G-PON networks to go XGS-PON keep reading they have done 90% of the network but this appears to be a made up number ?

Cheers

What makes you think it's made up?

I don't think they are routinely swapping ONT's as part of their upgrade. GPON ONT's continue to work alongside XGS-PON.

CityFibre have fewer than 100 locations so installing XGS-PON OLTs across the whole network shouldn't be such a big task for them.

When they said 90% of FEX it immediately rings alarms bells, as why would you say that?

Anyway, I did find an article which stated the footprint coverage is closer to 20%. It would be nice if TBB actually challenged CF on the 90% number to get clarification if it means actually enabled on the footprint.

At the end of 2023 I think it was closer to 20% of foot print, CF successfully manipulated some media outlets when they reported 90% of FEX and then media assumed it meant 90% of their network.

Sadly they only seem to be sharing the rollout schedule with their ISP partners.

90% of FEX will have XGS-PON by the end of the year.
20% of the addressable footprint will have access to the 2.5Gbps product.

I read that as 2 independent statements. You're assuming if XGS-PON is enabled on a FEX then the 2.5Gbps product should be available.

That's not necessarily how it works. You could be connected to an XGS-PON FEX but not have 2.5Gbps available to you yet. There could be other upgrades needing done before the higher tiers launch.

Kit goes in 1st, products get launched later. There's always a lag between the 2.

It wasnt me that assumed it should be available, I am not the one who reported it to be available to 90%.
