How many racks needed for a CO

[link to this post]

For a city the size of 200,000 population, how many racks are needed for XGS-PON service to all of the city based upon average consumer adoption? I mean just the racks with OLTs and associated hardware.

Seconly, how many XGS-PON subs will be aggregated into a single outside-of-plant Peerinig?

No idea. Are you thinking of starting your own AltNet ISP or something?

Hi,

You can definitely achieve a 16 OLT port per rack U density for XGS-PON, you may be able to achieve 32 PONs/U but I can't find a datasheet for something that supports that so lets assume 16 PONs/U.

Lets pessimistically assume a 1:32 PON split.

Lets also assume that you mean 200,000 premises rather than 200,000 population which is potentially very different. (Does everyone live alone with there being no public buildings?).

You need 200000/32 = 6250 PONs

You need 6250/16 = 391 U of rack space

If you have 48U racks then you need 391 / 48 = 9 racks.

This is all without consideration of cooling, power supply, switching, etc. That that level of density may be incompatible with your chosen cooling solution for example.

Obviously if you can achieve 32 PONs/U then you can halve that. If you're willing to go for a higher split on your PONs you may be able to substantially reduce that as well (e.g. a 1:128 split would quarter the requirement for OLTs taking you down to 3 racks).

You could conceive of a solution which occupied a single rack if you used a very high level of splitting,.especially if you found hardware with a higher OLT/U density.

I have no idea what your second question means.

Edited to add: Your question didn't set a limit on the size of the rack so I propose that 1 is always the answer as you could have a 1000U rack constructed and installed in a lift shaft. This may help your cooling as well as I should imagine the chimney effect would lead to a substantial airflow.

In old BT exchange building there is certainly space for racks of 72U and potentially way more. And then what about back to back racks ...

As your response suggests, a near impossible question to answer.

also potentially you may find, with different building different cooling capacity etc...... Just too many variables. Also some pons won't serve 30 properties (taking the 1:30 (2) route)
