Im having Swish installed tomorrow and somewhat nervous my setup wont work anymore and the family will never forgive me.
LOL. No responsibility taken for anything said here ...
Im currently on BT internet. I have my own router (TP Link Archer VR400) together with 3 x TP Link Deco M5. Router is currently set up using 'BT VDSL' from the dropdown list which prefills 'PPPOE' from the 'connection' type. Of course swish isnt in the list of options but there is 'other'. when using 'other' the connection types are Dynamic IP or Static IP. I assume I just use Dynamic IP ? What about the other settings:
- DSL modulation type (VDSL or ADSL)
- VLAN ID - enable yes/no
- VLAN ID 1-4094 - currently set to 101
None of this should be in play because:
Router is currently in bridge mode as I have TP Link Deco M5 in 'Router Mode' to take advantage of the parental controls etc.
So
All works fine and has done for 5 years so Ive forgotten how I got it all working in the first place. Was very much trial and error as I recall.
Time to write yourself a 'Howto'
Please can anyone point me in the right direction so I can do this as painlessly as possible
- get the router working with the ONT AND keep the router in bridge mode so I dont have to change anything on the M5 side?
OK, fix firmly in your mind where the boundary is between your LAN and your WAN. As the M5 is operating in router mode and your VR400 is in bridge mode, the M5 is LAN side and the VR400 is WAN side.
So, you must do nothing, absolutely nothing with the M5 until you understand this. Next, understand that the VR500 is only effectively acting as an ADSL modem, so what you must do with this is throw it away, because you no longer need an ADSL modem.
Now, understand that the M5 is your router and that the VR400 never was. So, it should be obvious that you connect the WAN port of the M5 to the ONT, because the ONT is the incoming port for the WAN and the WAN interface is on the M5 as it always has been.
Next, think about your M5 and realise that you have told us about the connection settings on the VR400, which you are going to throw away is likely not relevant. Instead look at the connection settings for the M5. Now look at the connection settings which Swish Fibre have given you and try to marry the 2 together. Swish will either be giving you DHCP or PPPoE and your M5 should hopefully support this.
In moving from ADSL to Fibre, you now have a WAN connection which is entirely ethernet and no need for modems, so irt boils down to sorting out the right connection from the M5 to the ONT.
From the M5 Spec
https://www.tp-link.com/uk/home-networking/deco/deco... it supports these WAN types:
Dynamic IP
Static IP
PPPoE
PPTP
L2TP
so it is just a matter of getting the connection credentials from Swish.
