FTTC switching provider but cabinet FULL

[link to this post]

Hello currently with a provider (talk talk). Happy with the service but an offer on Vodafone plus my mobile is on Vodafone so will be abit cheaper. I’m looking at potentially switching but my cabinet is full and has been for some time. Im worried that if I switch I may end up on adsl ha. Just spoke to Vodafone and there saying we will perform a take over so should be no loss of service but would hate to end up on 10mb adsl connection

Unless things have changed since I was very active re FTTC, IIRC three orders are executed by Openreach.

First, your connection is terminated. (In Openreach language a disconnection is still an "order").

Second, this has created a spare connection at the cabinet and it is allocated to the top-of-the waiting list order. (Your Vodafone order is bottom of the list assuming there is a waiting list.

Third, the attempt to connect you for Vodafone fails so you are instead connected to ADSL2+. Waiting for the waiting list to be reduced over time until you are at the top and get the next freed connection.

I assume you were talking to the first tier sales or support. You need to get the second or third tier to get someone with sufficient experience and knowledge.

Connections: Pixel 6a on Three 4+ (LTE)/5G, OnePlus 8 Pro on EE in reserve. At home Three Mobile, with (Three)ZTE MC888 router giving 5G most of the time..

Yeah I was worried. Luckily talk talk came back to me and have matched the Vodafone offer which is all I wanted. My talk talk connection with my openreach fttc modem plus own router and mesh wifi causes me no issues and get a 7ms ping so all good. Thanks for the reply. 👍👍

It was a long time ago that I switched but my old connection remained active during the switchover. I remember because I was away playing golf on the day of the switchover and forgot about it. It was a day or two later when the connection dropped that I remembered to update my router credentials. This was a move from Plusnet to IDNet.

I suppose things might have changed but I can see no reason why Openreach would need to disconnect the line during a transfer. That sounds like an unnecessary expense. All they have to do is update the RAS which is quick and cheap.

I think you are remembering ADSLx switching, Andrue. That always happened in those days.

Not the same on FTTC, as with two ISPs I was able to see the actual Openreach action sequence on the ISP's portal.

Nope. I was never on Plusnet or IDNet with ADSL.

What you suggest doesn't make sense. Aside from the extra work they are causing themselves they are risking seriously annoying existing customers like the OP, the respective ISPs and Ofcom. People switch a lot, Ofcom wants them to and Openreach would come in for a lot of stick from all quarters if it kept costing people their connection.

Take a look here.

Going between two BT Wholesale resellers doesn't need any Openreach action, that's why the migration experience can differ depending on which ISPs you're moving from/to.

Quite.

Openreach price list, a CP-CP migration is £3.71 + VAT. A tad cheap when a PCP only install is £57.11 + VAT. Definitely no engineer to the PCP for an FTTC migration. Just a configuration change to move that port to new VLAN(s) so it reaches the new CP.

Theres not an hope ofcom would allow open reach to disconnect your FTTC connection
and force you on to ADSL because you wanted to shop around and get a cheaper deal on a connection currently active with a retailer not beig able to be transferred to another retailer

stop scare mongering its what BT retail used to do and the exact reason why openreach now run totally separately to its parent company
