Breaking free of BT

[link to this post]

Hooray... Local Teleco OGI/Spectrum Comms has fibred up our street (well ahead of BT/EE)

Soooo off to them I go.

I currently have a FritzBox handling the ADSL.

The Fritz can be configured to act as a router/AP and get its internet connection from another device - so I think thats the way I am going to go; disable the WiFi on the OGI supplied kit (a Zyxel EX3301) and tell the Fritz to connect to that (wired connection) for the internet.

I am guessing that there is no way to connect the ONT direct to the Fritz (which is a shame) unless anyone here has experience otherwise...

Its all go on Halloween so that should be fun.

I don't know what FB model you have, but I successfully used an old FB 3590 on my fibre line.

From memory you can set one of the ethernet ports to accept the WAN connection from the ONT, then I just had to setup up the PPPoE authentication.

You use LAN1 on the F!B to connect to the ONT with a Cat5e, or better, cable. Check the user manual (downloadable from Fritz AVM) to confirm this.

Good luck!...... Whilst you may dislike the BT group. Open reach has nothing to with bt retail or EE.

Connection details are in the user guide or online. Here is Zen’s guide for the 7530.

FWiW, I use a Fritz!Box 4060 router on my FTTP line.

Just a note - I think a lot of fibre companies (including the one delivering to me) now use plain, old DHCP rather than PPPoE as was common for VDSL. Should be a simple configuration option, but OP definitely needs to find out which setting to use for the WAN port or it won't work smile

yeh - my F!B can be set up as a cascaded router - grabs its IP from an upstream device by DHCP (or via PPPoE; configurable).

I will use that option cos (for lack of ear ache from SWMBO and simplicity) I have the voice service from OGI as well - so I will plug the DECT into the OGI router and the F!B also into the OGI router, configuring LAN1 on the F!B appropriately.

It gives me, effectively, a real DMZ and a guest wifi with no chance of access internally. Only tricky thing will be to set up Wireguard but that's only for my convenience not for anyone who matters!

I am fully aware of the "separation" of BT/Openreach and have used EE/BT for mobiles for years becasue they offered what I wanted when I wanted it. Oddly as part of this comms retrenchment I am moving my mobile back to EE becasue BT can't offer me the same deal.

I don't dislike BT/EE - they just haven't fibred up my street and OGI/Spectrum have. I need the bandwidth now, not a promise of badwidth sometime in 2026.

Well its all done...

Ogi 200Mbps FTTP installed, FritzBox connected via LAN1 for Internet connection, All devices previously connected to Fritz!Box still connected (F!B has kept WiFi config SSIDs and PWDs as expected/hoped)

TBB Speedtest results are as expected

My Broadband Speed Test

Landline connection - not migrated yet (apparently will happen 10 working days after FTTP installed) but a RJ11 left hanging out of the Nokia network termination box onto which I will hang the existing DECT base. Yeh I know I could VoIP it, but this way keeps things simple for SWMBO.

Just in case anyone is interested re. the actual install process.... They turned up 6 minutes before the appointment slot ended with a cherry picker for the BT pole end of things and a couple of friendly, polite and efficient guys to do the hard bits. ONT installed at a mutually convenient place in the front room, Zyxel router connected by them and they left 50 minutes later having explained how to connect things. 10/10 experience,
